The movie censor represents a peculiar relationship to the public, the artist, the financier. Above all, he offers as entertaining a show as can be seen in the complex currents of American life. The spectacle of an office full of men and women, hired (or self-appointed, as is many times the case), bending diligently to the task of finding smut, corruption, filth as their daily work, would be hilariously funny did they not hold the whip hand over the greatest artists, writers and actors of the land. What manner of people are these? Do they live the monastic lives of the Passion Players, or are they reformed crooks, evil livers turned to the good life, ably fitted to detect crimeinspiring words, lust-producing photographs? There are state, federal and city movie censors. There are self-appointed censors, often asserting more power than the state-paid guardians of the pure. While they have no rules, no codified laws for determining what is pure, what is wicked, they work with the same technique from California to Maine. 3
