BABY NEEDS STOCKINGS by one measure man's bewilderment. Yet a fanatic is a positive force. He is active. It happens that fanaticism reaches an epitome of organization in movie censorship. The movie censor is a curious exhibit, not only because he has flagellated life and courage from a promising craft, but because he has gained strength and has the dignity of law, salary, mothers and churches by his side. Before we have left the reviewing stand we shall see many familiar faces. Their numbers, the strength of their troops should not be underestimated. Given a sheet of paper and a pen, a man is comparatively free to say what he likes. He is in an Eden of fair play compared to a director with a camera. Not the producer, not the public, nor even a small part of the public is responsible for the sterility of the American movie. Nor can the producer alone be blamed for the gross, vapid illusions of life contained in the ordinary movie. The censor, the forces giving him power, are responsible. We shall talk with him, work with him and see him. Meantime examine a few scattered examples of his work. 5
