THE SAINTS AT WORK matches set up (presumably) to represent man and woman in embrace, wherein the burning matches bend, contort, etc. You can't play with fire in Pennsylvania. From "Docks of New York" they cut a scene in which a stevedore is leaving a woman's bedroom. He counts out some money for her, glances at her sleeping form, and then, after deliberating, counts out an extra fee. This eliminated scene did not mar this very excellent movie, but it aroused speculation. A stevedore rescues a streetwalker who has attempted suicide. In a drunken brawl he marries her. In the morning he sobers up, counts out a usual fee for her and leaves. After he goes she gets in trouble. He leaves his ship, comes back to her. It was a picture full of beautiful photography, directed by Von Sternberg. The elimination of the bedroom scene in no way destroyed the grim reality, the sordid background of the story. The scene was only one of many grim incidents. However, it was funny, and that is the only reason the censors could have had for choosing to eliminate it, 57
