History monotonously swings its pendulum. If only they had the courage, the whimsy of the real aristocrats, the patrons of fine lace, painting and music, they could really pacify their yeomen. The American is no fool. The movie bores him, so he drinks gin. The radio irritates him, so he takes his neighbour's wife. Organization eventually will suffocate him, and he will start breaking the machinery. Unhappy, violent, yet bored, middle class America is capable of any rebellion.
