Nobody stopped to consider that the element of novelty of that first picture, accounted for its tremendous success and nobody could possibly know that as a matter of fact, that first Spanish talkie left a negative reaction on everyone who paid a high price for the privilege of hearing it. Discard then, all the apparent causes of failure of the Spanish talkies produced so far, and consider whether the Spanish markets are big enough to absorb by themselves a high quality special product on a par with the usual Hollywood standards. It seems to us that this conclusion has just been reached by some higher-ups and therefore the sudden and complete cessation of activities in some of the most important studios. But it would be just as foolish and shortsighted to give up the idea of making Spanish talkies without a fair trial, as it was to rush blindly into it. The Spanish markets can, and will, be developed by those who will take the trouble and pains to find the way to success. And Spanish talkies will be made in neutral Hollywood if they are to be acceptable to all Spanish-speaking peoples. Not in any Spanish countries or in Joinville, France, where the obstacles to success in this field are a thousandfold. Hollywood with its magic name and fame is the only logical place and not our own countries with their diversified views and regional preferences.
