Ron Blumer and Erasmus Stephen Chesley E “ se Natalie Edwards Laurinda Hartt 4 Cinema Canada EDITORIAL It was that time of year again and frankly, | got nostalgic over the Canadian Film Awards. | miss them. Granted, there were problems. Granted, the CFTA, CSC and CFE had their awards again this year. But it’s not the awards | missed. | missed the exhilaration of watching a solid week of films from Québec and Canada. Of course it will be nice to see all these films in our neighbourhood theatres once the overdue and (hopefully) imminent quotas ensure exhibition. But that cannot replace the excitement of getting together and celebrating a year’s work in a Festival. We urge our film community to start anew. We all know that political and other realities have made the old CFA obsolete, but fresh ideas would give birth to a better system. (Perhaps we could have two theatres side-by-side and run Canadian films in one and Québécois films in the other?) Exactly how we do it is not as important as discovering new solutions. We cannot leave this kind of festival to organizers in Berlin and Sorrento only. We need it far more here. Intimate notes: Once, a panel of filmmakers was asked why each stayed in Canadian Cinema when it was so difficult? One filmmaker simply said: ‘‘Because | love the people in it... .” (Yes) Your Favourite Canadian Film Magazine people have shifted since our introduction in last issue — Harris Kirshenbaum has gotten an offer he couldn’t refuse from OECA and Debbie Mills is our new Advertising Manager. Harris will still be our Technical Editor, Debbie is still handling subscriptions, so not everything has changed. We’re also introducing four more members of your FCFM family — Ron Blumer, Stephen Chesley, Natalie Edwards and Laurinda Hartt. Ron has been an active filmmaker (Freedom, The Wind Up), film reviewer and lecturer for longer than his rabbit, Erasmus, can remember. Stephen was the editor of Impact and Canadian Film Digest in past lives. Natalie writes for all kinds of other magazines (Toronto Citizen, Star Weekly, etc.) besides being an active filmperson now working on 2 script, and Laurinda was sent to us by Jim Beveridge and Jay Leyda while she was still at York University. All four of them are lovely people whose by-lines you've read long enough. . . . Cinema Canada would like to wish all our readers a blessed time during this season of Holy Days, may we have far more films made next year, and may you enjoy reading our 88-page Special Holiday Issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Peace... . Your (wo)managing editor
