Committee Reports was the business of the day. The following committees submitted information reports : Documentary-Chair — Richard Stringer/Paul Mitchnick — report by Greg Farrow on the documentary Contract. Trainee Programmes — Chair-Len Gilday — report by Brittney Burr on the many trainee programs being organized by ACFC. Constitution — Chair — Ken Post, a schedule of by-laws is in the works. Standards — Chair — David Ostriker — a new committee — a forum for members to discuss problems of ethics, behaviour ie. general standards for how ACFC runs itself. Guild Hall — Chair — John Williamson — an update on ACFC participation in the proposal for Guild Hall — a building to house Canadian theatre, film and televisiom guilds and unions to share common facilities. Contract — Chair — Frieder Hochheim — a new committee to take suggestions from members and make recommendations to Council on the use and vitality of the contract. Pension/ Benefits — Chair — John Thomson — another new committee. ACFC is now in a position to put invested monies to work in benefit schemes for members.

costume designers. The grip department has organized its first seminar for Directors of Photography, Grips and Gaffer/Electricians and any other departments interested in how those departments interact on set.
ACFC ‘carpenters will soon be presenting ther “hands-on” training programs. The camera department is itself organizingg technical information on film stocks for seminar presentation.
The membership is busy and involved in the organization, contracts are in negotiation for future productions, and the Martin-Paul production Clown White has just been signed to the ACFC contract. Our position is being solidified in the industry. Membership is now close to 300. We look good for the eighties !

TORONTO — Jack Gray, Toronto writer, was re-elected national president of ACTRA at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors in Toronto on January 26th and January 27th. Mr. Gray has been active in the union for many years, serving at different times as a national director, member of the executive and chairman of Fee SM Writers’ Council.
The Board of Directors also reelected Bruce MacLeod, a B.C. performer, as first vice-president. Other ACTRA directors elected to the national executive were Barry McLoughlin (Ottawa), second vice-president; Jack Goth (Calgary), treasurer; Rob Forsyth (Toronto), chairman of the Writers’ Council ; Nanci Rossov (Toronto), chairperson of the Performers’ Council. Joyce Gordon and Sean Mulcahy, Toronto performers who served on the last executive, were elected members-atlarge.

The association received a healthy number of new members and is happy to extend a warm welcome to them. The Honourable Pat Jordan sent a message to the BCFIA which was delivered to the meeting by Jan Campbell of ‘the Provincial Film Office.
It read: “‘I am pleased to take note of the productive relationship that has been ripening over the past two years between the British Columbia Film Industry and the Ministry of Tourism. As you no doubt know, this co-operation brought into the province last year, $40 million in feature films and television productions, more than triple the amount in 1978. In 1980, we are hoping to see $100 million worth of film and television production carried out in locations throughout the province. As the new Minister of Tourism, I want to assure you that we will continue to do as much as we can in facilitating the growth of your industry and in fostering the growing reputation of British Columbia as an unparalleled backdrop and working environment for all types of film.”
Since that time the BCFIA has received a letter from Ms. Jordan, Suggesting a meeting with both BCFIA executive and with the membership at large. Though she was not able to confirm a date at that time we are hoping to arrange a reception for mid-April.
The Feature Film Financing Seminar is progressing well. The dates have been set at May 2nd and 3rd and the seminar is to be held at the Robson Square Media Centre. The event will feature noted speakers
from Vancouver, Toronto, Edmon‘ton, Winnipeg and Los Angeles, will cover all major aspects of Feature Film Finance and will be of interest to anyone concerned with Feature Film Production. Seminar brochures will be sent to all BCFIA members early in April and pre-registration will begin April 14th.

TORONTO — Canadian National Exhibition (C.N.E.) will: again feature a Film Competition and Festival, open to students in all post-secondary schools in Canada. It will be } held, for the first time, in the refurbished Carlsberg Festival Building Theatre during the 20 days of the Exhibition (August 13 September 1, 1980).
Along with the new theatre, the CNE Film Competition and Festival announces inauguration of the Norman Jewison Award (of $2,000.00) to the Overall Winning Film. Festival Awards of $500.00 go to the Best Entry in Animation, Documentary, Experimental and Narrative categories.
