CFEC Canadian Film Editors Guild (416) 485-3222
The guild has sent the following letter to the Canadian Association of Motion Picture Producers :
“The Canadian Film Editors Guild wishes to recognize an important contribution to the advancement of film editing which is being made by motion picture producers. We refer to those producers whose courage and forward vision enables them to offer opportunities to competent editors to work for the first time on a feature film.
“It can be very difficult for even the most skilled and experienced editor to find a chance to prove his
or her ability to edit a feature film. The Guild realizes that those producers who are making this chance available are doing so at some risk. Since these opportunities often represent a very important step in the carcers of our members, the Guild believes this positive policy merits our sincere appreciation.
““We believe this policy is good for the future, not just of film editors, but of the entire film industry. Editors who are gaining their first experiences now will be available in the future, as experienced feature film editors, to those who will need their services in an expanding industry. On behalf ofall our member editors, we express our thanks to C.A.M.P.P., and our hope for successful cooperation between our respective members in the Deas ahead.”

(CAMPP), the Canadian Film and —

Agreements was March 31, 1980, however according to provisions in both Performers and Writer Agreements, “It is agreed that during the period of negotiations for the re
newal of the Agreement, the provisions of the Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.”’
ACTRA is committed to nego
tiate a fair and equitable settlement with the engager representatives. It
is the right and duty of the Associa
tion to protect the artistic integrity of the professional performer and writer and to ensure that they are fairly compensated for the work they do.
At a conference call meeting April 17, 1980, the Association’s Board of Directors received a report from the Negotiating Committee
~that there are serious difficulties
arising in negotiations and that vital and key areas of the Collective Agreement remain unresolved. The Board of Directors gave support to the efforts of the Negociating Committee for their continuing efforts to reach a fair settle
-ment with the engagers. The Board
also took the position that in the event of an impasse in current negotiations, the membership must be prepared to withdraw their services from engagers in support of the basic and key needs of professional performers and writers and more specifically to resist any efforts to erode rights that have been established in ACTRA Collective Agreements for many years.
