Estas eran credenciales bastantes para el “asalto” que Raúl acababa de darle. Don Oliverio Rodríguez se encantó con la llegada de don Próspero y familia y nos brindó su hospitalidad. Arregladas las mesas y sentados ya todos alrededor de ellas, Raúl ordenó al manager: —Sirvanos champagne en abundancia y al descorcharlo haga que la orquesta toque el himno dominicano. Así lo hizo el manager. Y en cuanto saltó el primer corcho, Cugat hizo oír las notas del himno y los seis individuos de nuestra mesa nos pusimos en pie. Sea por la política de buen vecino, o por lo que fuese, toda la concurrencia hizo lo mismo y de mesa en mesa la noticia de la estancia en el Ciro de un famoso personaje latino americano, corrió como la pólvora. Todos aplaudieron. Las damas miraban curiosas a don Próspero y a don Oliverio Rodríguez, hombre de gran distinción. Los caballeros clavaban la mirada en la belleza semi-desnuda y tropical de Irene y se escuchaban rumores de: “iPresidente?... ¿De qué?... ¿De dónde?... ¿Quién?... ¿Cuál? ... ¿El de los bigotes?... ¿Es una escena de una película? ... No, ¡es un General de verdad!...” Más tarde se cambiaron saludos, presentaciones, efusiones... Raúl bailó rumbas legítimas con las damas... Don Oliverio Rodríguez bailó valses maravillosos con Irene... La pareja de éste, una trigueña bellísima, trató de enseñar el “jitterbug? a don Próspero ..... Yo lo observaba todo con cierta melancolía. Fué una noche de ensueño, de alegría, de esperanzas. ¡Acecha la aventura! Pero en mi fuero interno, yo me pregunto desde que desperté al día siguiente en mi cama, qué clase de aventura será la que nos acecha. ¿Ascenderemos Raúl y yo a la fama, gracias a los dólares de don Próspero y a la belleza de Irene? ... ¿O iremos a despertar de nuestros sueños de gloria en un lúgubre calabozo de la cárcel de Los Angeles? ... ¡El tiempo dirá!
