Williams, manager).—The Inclement weather did not deter the regular Monday patrons from oc- cupying their accustomed places on March 23, consequently a good sized audience ap- plauded what Manager Williams happily announces as "a laughing show," for this week. Tom Nnwn and company havo the honor of topping the bill in "Pat , and the Genii," and there Is nothing; bettet In Its way In vaudeville today than this little comedietta. Liberally, und most ap- propriately staged, It la finely acted as well, and the audience was quick to observe and appreciate both facts, which resulted in an approval marked by liberal applause, Pic- colo's Midgets, four clever IIIIputlaiiK, furnished agreeable entertainment In a varied act, concluding with their funny bur- lesque boxing bout. Academy of Hasle (Gllmore 4 Tomp- kins, managers).—"The Suburban," a melo- drama, In four acts and eleven scenes, by C. T. Dazey, was produced here March 2a, for the Orel time In New York, an audience which completely filled this big house giving ample tesUmouy to tho fact that Its nu- merous stirring features struck a responsive chord of appreciation. It received its llrst production on uny stage at McVleker's The- atre, Chicago, May 0, 1902. Thero are pro- vided during the unfolding of n very con- ventional plot enough thrilling Incidents to make tho most ardent admirer of melodrama feel that his wants havo been generously looked after, and, as tbo stirring situations In question follow one another with cumu- lative Interest nnd aro well led up to and cnpltally carried out, the play takes rank as ii very good cxamplo of Its class. Tho fact that Its story follows along old and well worn melodramatic grooves Is forgotten in the pulse quickening linpnenlugs which tbo dramatist has sown so liberally throughout, and the audience, on the opening night, set nn unmistakable seal of approval upon the production. In the race scene, from which the piny tnkes Its nnmc, every possible feature of the mco truck which It was within the power of the producer, Jacob I,ltt, 1o dupllcnto upon the idngc, hns been well shown, and nt. least n dozen fine horses nnd Jockeys nre presented In a contest thnt wns so well depleted thnt the curtain fell upon a Bccnc of enthu- siasm which swept away any possible doubts of the nlny's success. The scenic embellish- ment throughout tho production was com- plete and Impressive, and many nctlng suc- cesses were scored by the presenting com- pany. In brief, tire story tells of how Donald Gordon, the son of a wealthy man, marries against his father's wishes, and Is cast off by tho father. Donald then leaves tho country on a cmlso In an endeavor to earn a living for himself nnd wife, but remains away from home for a number of years. During his absence, n distant relative, Kir Ralph, robs Hoiinhl's father, casts tho blame of the deed upon Donald, and Ingratiates himself into tho elder Cordon's favor. But Donald returns In lime to save his fnther from nbsoluto ruin nt the bands of ltalpli. whose plans to dope the father's horse In the Suburban are foiled. Explanations restore Donald to his father's favor and to tho loving nrnis of his wife and little daughter. Chas. I'. Gotthold made a manly and forceful Donald, W. s. Hart wns very good as the villain Ralph, ami J. II. Glinioiir did excellent work as the father. A very well drawn old man char- acter was the one ployed by John Jennings, ns the elderly attendant, and Theodore Mnr- ston won a great deal of favor as tho loyal friend of Donnld. George C. Mtnlcy wns welt liked as a German, and an Irish comedy part received good intention at the hands ot Annie Mack Berleln. One of the biggest hits of the piny was made by Tittle BesHlo Burt, a child who knows a great deal about acting, as she proved on the opening night. Another player who made a decidedly good Impression was Kingsley Ben- edict, as the sturdy little stable boy who rlile» tho winning horse. The role of tho young wife wns capably taken by Jessie Izctt, and Fauchon Campbell made u pretty and captivating sister of tho abused hero. GiNirge A. Wright and Taylor Granville also deserve mention for excellent work. The east: Robert Gordon, J. II. Gllmour; Donald Gordon Chus. H. Qotthold; Sir Ralph Gor- don, W. 8.
