Engineer 1'ropst, who was running tho en- gine of the rear train, says he saw the red danger signal ahead and applied tbo air- brake, but to his horror It refused to work. He reversed his engine, but tho momrntO.ni of tbo heavy train behind was too great, and with a crash that aroused all of tbo town near the yards the two trains met. Tnree cars of the stationary first section were telescoped and the engine and flvo enrs were demolished. Tho rear of tho first sec- tion was a caboose. In which the trainmen were sleeping, and the next two were tilled with sleeping rlrcua employes. Tho great- est loss of life was In the caboose. Ono of the wrecked cars of the second section was occupied by Ave elephants and several camels. One of the elephants and two camels were killed. Tho other animals and their trainer escaped. With the exception of this enr, none of the menagerie was wrecked, the other demolished cars containing canvas or wngons. As soon as they recovered from the first shock the circus men rushed among the rages, (piloting (ho beasts that wero ex- cited. Many feared at first that same of tho menagerie hnd escaped, us some of the animals could be heard crying. The lire whistle was immediately sounded and tho whole town was aroused.
