Zlska A King, Keith's BIJou, Phlla., Sept 38-Orl. A After unremitting labor and tbe overcom- ing of many obstacles, Robert E. Bell has now eucceeded In putting upon a solid basis his laudable project for establishing a sana- torium for actors. 'Mr. Bell announces that he hopes cy next Spring that sufficient funds will be at band to make possible tbe erec- tion of tbe buildings for the purpose, Tbe Sanatorium Association has been in- corporated under tbe laws of tbe State of Colorado by Mr. Bell, Peter McCourt and Horace Phelps, the name of tbe Institution being the Bell Sanatorium for Consumptive Actors. On Sept. 18 a meeting was held at Denver for the purpose of electing officers and adopting by-laws. The officers, chosen unanimously, are: C. M. Van Law, presi- dent ; Peter MoConrt, first vice president; Abbey R, Pelton, second vice president; Ed- ward S. Irish, treasurer; Robert E. Bell, secretary, and Mrs. Robert E. Bell, assistant secretary. Denver will be the permanent ad- dress of the corporation, for Its principal office will be In that city. We quote the announced objects of the Institution. "To establish and maintain a home and sanatorium In tbe State of Colorado for consumptive actora; to raise and procure funds for that purpose; to acquire real and personal property for that purpose by every means known to tbe law; to acquire real estate for tbe location of such home and sanatorium; to erect and construct buddings therefor; to receive gifts, bequests, legacies and devises of real and personal property by way of endowment or otherwise; to sell and convey any and all proporty that may be acquired by the corporation for the purpose of raising funds for carrying on Its objects; and generally to do and perform each and every act, proper and Incident to fully establish, operate and maintain a home and sanatorium for actors affected with consumption." « a » THE MORMON APOSTLE'S FOURTH WIFE, AND HOW SHE HE- GARDED THE BARGAIN. Mrs. Merrlvale bad watched tbe approach of tbe Mormon wltb a thrill of foreboding. That her handsome, high spirited Joan should enter such a life seemed unendur- able, yet, after all, what brighter prospect could sbe hope for? Better not to taste young love than to learn Its bitterness, as she herself had done. Still, sbe could not be reconciled to the marriage nor bring herself to deck the girl for her bridal, and when the wedding day came she feigned Illness to avoid being present at the ceremony. "Perhaps It's all for tbe best, Joan," she had said: "I'm not saying It Isn't, but when I look back on my own happy wedding day 1 can't see you married to this mnn, who can't cherish you wltbout Insulting the best woman that ever breathed." 'That's Just It," exclaimed Joan In reply. "I ain't afraid to marry the old fellow. I'd rather be an old man's darling than a young man's slave any day; bat If I thought it'd hurt dear old Mother Evelyn I'd put my right band In the Are first. But he never goes nigh her anyway, If he can help it, and I can see to It that she's a lot more comfortable than she Is now. Vou needn't be afraid but what I'll get along with Apostle Jones—he'll not boss me ^round as be has Sarah Mary and Christine, I can tell you!" , Tbe mother could only slgb at the girl's confidence. Oh, blessed Ignorance of maiden hood, what a price you ofttlmes pay for innocence. "As for happy marriages," Joan con- tinued, "there ain't none In this country. So cheer up, Mumsey. Just think what It'll be to have an apostle for a son-in-law, and you shall have some of the comforts, too, In your old ago." The mother's was not the only protest. There was a lover In the case and ne pleaded eloquently against this desecration, but In vain. "I'll not deny I'm fond of you," Joan answered him, "and If we were back In the dear old Vermont mother tells about I'd many you In a minute, but I can't trust yoo here, Hyrum. You're overfond of a pretty face When the bloom bad left mine you'd be- taking another wife, jUBt like the rest of them. I couldn't stand that. I'd not cure with Apostle Jones." "Joan, let's go to the States, then; but I d never have no other wife, no matter how hard the elders preached!" "That's what father said, but he broke my mother's henrt Just the game. As for going to the States, how could we go?" So the deed was done, and It In to be hoped that the recording angel dropped the traditional tear over this ruin of another ypung life, but It caused not a ripple of pity in the community of the saints. Nor did Its victim consider herself an object of pity, any more than does Miss Blank, who marries millions or a title.— Lilt Munsull, lAppincotft Magazine. ^ ♦ *»- SOME BAD BREAKS.
