Mr. Bancker refused to Jojn or sell to tlio Institute,' and' In consequence the managers determined to.break him up. They sent a show after him which struck him at llagers- town, Md., and the greatest opposition suason ever known followed. He first.-visited Cali- fornia In 1852, since which time he made an- nual tours throughout tho State, and neigh- boring territories. Last Summer he accom- panied Messrs.' Lee A Kylnnd on their, per- forming tour; but those who saw him ob- served that his brilliancy was gone, and that Ms power was a thing of the pant. The cause A°K^vts^uS^s^g»^ -gnu^ farce, which would seem more appropriate, burger and Charles .W. Nelson la denied by a 5 i^H' Kenney, as Dooley, handles most both parties. It seems they are friendly, of the comedy, In conjunction with Eddie Collins, as Casey. Collins has a make-up which Is a cross between a .clown and an Irishman. However, It provokes some laugh- ter and fits well to his speeches. Hester Waters, as the daughter of one of the pros- perous Irishmen, manages to look pretty and sing daintily. Willie Mack, a Juvenile man, has a voice that makes a noise. If not har- mony, and he Blbgs "Mammy's Shufflln' Dance" and a few other numbers that bring him some applause. The chorus consists of several maidens of old vintage, but with the help of make-lip they deceive nature and the nudlcnce. Two of the company, Gene Pol- lard and Willie Mack, offer their respective skits In tbe olio. Gay Wldowa 25. Majkotio (Lyman II. Glover, mgr.)—Eva Tanguay was held over for another week. The houses, of course, were tremendous, and in fact, were sold out entirely with tbe ex that they have pleasant business relations, but there la nothing more binding in tbelr dealings. The Aerial Bcdds .have been placed at Hammersteln's for a. New York showing, by Walter Mcakin, of the A. K. Meyers office. Ollie Martel, who bas been In advance of one of "The Rosary" companies, has returned to the city and Is to be seen along the Rlalto once more. Ed. Anderson, one of tbe well known figures along the Rlalto, has been out in the country with a mechanical doll act called "Proto," and has been meeting with success. The management of the Casino Theatre gave a box party to the young ladles em- ployed by the W. V. M. A. on Tueadaynlght. The party, chaperoned by Mildred Wiener, consisted of Mabel Swanson, Marie Wyman, Adellotte Dunn, May O'Connor, Adelaide Redeskl and "Freckles." Tbe young women ception of Wednesday, when the city received even .stayed for the regular weekly waltzing contest, and some even wanted to contest, but were prevented by a house rule that pre- vents anyone connected with the theatre staff from competing In any contest which Is held. William Flimbn and Compant were add- ed to the bill at tbe Wilson Theatre on Sunday night, to take the place made vacant by the Stewart Sisters and Escorts, who bad to leave to fill engagements In Louisville. Tre Farbeb Sisters had a splendid re- ception at the Wilson Theatre last week, and received some, beautiful floral tributes during their engagement there. n terrible blizzard. Hlnton and Wooton opened in a novel football match on bicycles, -which proved interesting. Paul Barnes fol- lowed with Jokes and songs, and warmed up the front of the house somewhat. Caesar Itlvoll was In third position, and received n tremendous hand at the close. He is a clever artist In his specialty, and for those who have not seen him before, he proved a revelation. Cadets De Gascogne followed in a slow offering of opera singing, The Six Iirovt'tt Bros., were in position F, and set the bill to a fast pace with their comedy playing. The playing on the saxophone proved tho best of any of the other Instruments. Tbelr lilt of comedy was about the only thing on the bill in tills line. Edgar Atchison Ely their pursuers the slip, and sometimes trav- eled by wagon not less than sixty miles in a day, giving a performance into tho bargain. But the Institute' people, backed up by au enormous capital, never gave up the pursuit for an instant, and sometimes during tho season of 1836. they overhauled B. A S. at Erie, Pa., where both companies showed side and side for some days. Here the Institute party got Sweet away from tbe othor con- cern, and Bancker gave up and sold out to the monopoly, who gave a free performance to the citizens of Erie in honor of their triumph —a triumph which had cost them thousands and thousands of dollars. - Mr. Banckor was for many years asso- ciated with the late Gen. Rufua Welch, cither as a partner or in some business capacity, and was highly esteemed by that excellent man. He was with the general when he hsd a concern In Europe, and we believe Invested some money In, that enterprise, which did not prove a pecuniary success. He was a first- class advertiser, e. position for which his gen- ial manner and gentlemanly nddrcBs pecu- liarly fitted Mm, and In that capacity was widely and most favorably known throughout the United States. It is several years, however, since he gave up all connection with the circus business, and for some time previous to his death he was In quite feeble health. A eotenyporary states that he was In "destitute circum- stances." This Is as error, calculated to give pain to his friends. Although ho bed met with losses In his later years, he wna surrounded, up to the time of his decease, with every comfort that could be desired, and was tbe recipient of every attention that could be bestowed upon him. His memory will be tenderly cherished by a host of sur- viving friends. W. F. Wallett. and the circus season, closed at the American, Philadelphia, on Feb. 24. Tbe rumor comes from Victoria, V. I., by telegraph, and was brought to that city by tno captain of a vessel which arrived there from Tahiti. Ul. derstand that Messrs. Thayer A Noyes claim to have taken fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) during their stay at Mobile, my company being then at tin tamo time, and say that I took bnt four thousand dollars ($4,000). Both companies played there one week, opposite each other. Now, I contradict this, for I am thoroughly acquainted with the receipts of each company. The above gontlemcn and myself paid the internal rev- enue tax at the same time, and their receipts were $16,000 from tho time they left Chat- tanooga, Tenn., until the last day of their stay at Mobile, which was about three weeks or more. My receipts were $4,000 at Mobile alone. 1 do not think they took any more money than I did In the Ave days in the last place. This statement I claim to be true, or else tbey made a false one to the tax collector. -. A. Haioiit, Proprietor of G. W. De Havon k Co.'s Circus.
