ESCALATORS IN THEATRES, In this ago of progress, every contrivance or Invention which saves time and contributes to tho comfort snd convenience of tbe public, cannot be Ignored by any concern catering for the business of tbe general public. Fore- most amongst these Inventions is the esca- lator. Tbe climbing of stairs Is a laborious hardship to everyone, but it is an impos- sibility to many, especially tho aged, tbe crippled, and those afflicted with asthmatic or heart trouble. Tbe escalator is a great boon to all of them, aa it enables them to . rcsch any floor In a building without effort, SSLSPfUg tt * f** 1 *w H S$ e, v,! n l 5° R*™ 011 3 • •^ »>..,. i. „i.f »k- „,..n~ a >. ,. kin*' Milton, Joseph W. Olrard, the stage and thst Is what the public demands, It ma nagor, was perfect in the stereotyped role seems almost Incrcdlblo that up to tbe pres- of tbe actor of the old school. The cast: ent no theatre Is equipped with this great Justin Tyme Frank Armstrong written by Ben Shields, and the music 'Frank L,. Callahan, who Is tbe mualcsl di- rector at the Lee Avenue Theatre. The en- tire production wss produced under tbe direction of Hsrry E. UcKee. "It Never Happened" pleased the Lee Avelnue Theatre audience, and It would no doubt prove a big success It presented by a company used to musical comedy. It would do for a big mu- alcsl production If In tbe hands of a producer of big productions or, sa it Is, It would be well suited for a burlesque show, Its situa- tions are funny, providing ample opportunity for ths slapstk-k variety of humor which ratrons of burlesque theatres dearly love, t Is better in tbe realm of burlesque or mu- sical comedy in that It Is "perfectly whole- some." Some of the lyrics are good, though the Ideas about which they have been woven are rather tlmeworn, and tbe mualc Is catchy, though somewhat reminiscent. There la alao a realism about the prescntalon which even a Belaico may envy. Tho opening scene dis- closes the important buildings of an.up State village, the newspaper ofllce, the opera bouse, tho poat office, the hotel and the livery stable. The latter Is "set'* at the left of the stage In tbe foreground, and even pungent stable smell Is detected after the curtain Is raised. The post-mistress Is one of the first characters Introduced, and the dnst she raises as sho sweeps off the sidewalk In front of her premises, tended to choke those who sat In the first few rows of the orchestra Suite aa effectively sa the dust of sny up tste village could. Among the more noteworthy portraitures of character presented last night msy be mentioned that of the editor of The Jatpnr County Vindtoator, In the person of Harry Bowley and that of Carrie Onn, the maid of eonvenlence. Its advantages arc so obvious that every new theatre, and every old one, should be equipped with escalators reaching the balcony and gallery. An escalator is superior to tbe elevator, inasmuch as there Ik no waiting, no crowding and no breathing of stuffy atmosphere. It will carry 10,000 persona In an hour, and In case of Are con bo reveraed and carry tbe people down to safety aa quickly as It carried them up. It will prevent panic snd save lives and limbs, be- cause the people will know that it will carry them to safety. In addition to this, it will go far towards solving the problem which now confronts theatrical managers, as to how to fill up the empty seats In the balcony and gallery. Make It convenient of access and egress, and thousands of amusement- loving people will patronise It who cannot afford to pay tbe prices for orchestra seats, The escalator ia not intended to supersede unaware" the elevator In all esses, as there are, and this popular'song, always will te, conditions -which the elevator 'rlend» have long Cyrus Press Harry Bewley David Barrlck Joseph w.
