After an extended trip through Europe and America, J. C. Williamson has returned to his borne In Sydney. Among tie engagement* which be has made In bis absence from Au- stralia, was that of the Oscar Ascbe company for another Australian tour; Lewis Waller, and the Qulnlan Opera Co. He states that be Is not very hopeful that Sarah Bernhardt will visit Australia, although be bad made an engagement with ber some time age. He baa since come to the conclusion that at her age she would not be able to stand the bsrd work necessary In the rapid changes sad quick journeys. And be thinks, being In com- munication with madame, that she also looks at matters In the same light. Referring to the recent Melba. grand opera season, Mr. Williamson said he was delighted at the bis; success, Inasmuch as It would be a great advertisement for Australia, and showed the advance that had been made Jn things musical and thertrlcal during the past few years. "The Melba venture, I might state, came as a great surprise to many managers In Europe and America. The successes were beyond what I expected, because It did seem at one stage that the task of taking such a company a long distance was Impracticable. It will encourage us to exploit other big mu- sical stars. I was particularly pleased by the good work done by the Australians In the chorus and orchestra, and those who under- took small parts to make the operas success- ful." Questioned as to whether the formation of an actors' union met with his approval, be said that his attention bad been drawn to the fact that a section of Australian actors In Sydney and Melbourne had formed such a union lie bad also been informed that an actors' society, with George Tlthorndge as secretary, had been formed. "This latter," be remarked, "appears to be a reputable party." It Is surprising to me that toe the- atrical employees union and other unions should allow themselves to be used for the purpose of helping these unemployed actors, we have working agreements with theatrical employees and musical unions, and recognize them. Such a tblng as a boycott Is bound to Injure the latter unions, because If managers are hampered In their endeavor to cater for the Australian public, a retrograde move- ment in the profession will follow, and this will serve to lessen the number of ventures which at present employ a large number of actors. From my own experience I can say that there Is no country where the conditions of the theatrical and musical profession are better than in Australia at the present time. Before I left Australia we found It difficult to And competent actors, even for small parts. You may be certain that we would not Import actors, und pay them large salaries, and go to the expense of paying their pas- sages to and fro. If we could get the ma- terial In Australia. I believe the union Is asking for a minimum wage of £0 per week. Just fancy paying some of the men those wages. Why, the wages of members of the orchestra only average £3 10s. a week, and look at the preparation the latter has to go through. It seems to me that the latest union Is Intended mora for the purpose of using trades-unionism to enable a number of actors, many of whom have been tried and found wonting, to obtain a salary -which Is higher than that paid to musicians and others who have gone through a long and arduous prepa- ration. If I thought the union was likely to prove good to the profession generally, I would heartily give It support, but at present I am of an opposite opinion." "The Quaker Qirl,"at Her Majesty's The- atre, has caught on remarkably well and the applause of crowded houses denote that hon- ors are now divided by Blanche Brown, as Prurience, and Leslie Holland, as Tony Chute. The well-constructed musical comedy of "The Clngalee" has been drawing big houses to the Theatre Royal the past four weeks, and were It not for a time limit, the piece might have run until the end of the year. "A Fool There Was" began Its Sydney ca- reer at the Criterion Theatre, on Saturday, Fob. 3. with Geo. Wllloughby at the head of the managerial post Mabel Trevor end Hugh Buckler ate the two leading characters In the play. The rest of the cast calls for no com- ment. Pair business Is doing. William Anderson will present at the Tal-' ace Thcntrc, Saturday, Feb. 17, "My Part- ner," in which Walter Baker and Frances Ross will play the leading characters. The I'Hmmer-DennlRtoun Co. have, the past three weeks, occupied the Palace Theatre, their chief attraction being "The Village Priest," George Tltherndge's beautiful study of the dear old Abbe coming like a refreshing breeze. He was capitally assisted by Mrs. Branch, as the Countess; Pllmmer, as Ar- imuiil; Llzette Parkes, as Jeanne, and Be- atrice Day, as Madame D'Arsay. Indeed, the entire cast was splendid. It Is cxnctlv one week since the famous Tiny Town Midgets commenced their run of prosperity at the Sydney Exhibition, Prince Alfred Park. They are proving a big attrac- tion, which should insure fat dividends to the lucky shareholders. They arc thronged every afternoon nnd evening. If the union authorities are wise they will leave the man In the ticket office out of their consideration altogether. The right of managers to place tbelr own men In that Im- portant department should be respected. George the First, the well trained and educated chimpanzee, snd Introduced to Au- stralia by Dandy George, has lately died In Brisbane. The tour of the animal In Au- stralia was highly successful. It was ap- pearing under the Rlckards' management, In conjunction with Holland's Empire Theatre. The secretary of the Melbourne A. V. A. has lately been on a visit to Sydney, with the Intention of forming a branch of the order here. Whether he has succeeded or not, I am unable to say, as "Silence Is Golden" seems to be their motto. If the sec- retary snd other officials of the A. V. A. would endeavor to find a method to effectually prevent tie use by one artist of another's Business snd songs, they would be doing some practical good. Melbodbmb. The Du For Trio, Amerlcsn dancers, proved nimble steppers, both on the floor and the mat. The crowded Opera House gave them a homely greeting. Wilson Hallett's child mimicry was again the star stunt of the show, with the Tossing Testros, Fred Poplar, Alice Raymond, Henry and Hlnde, and Kitty Wsgcr next Marshall Crosby's baritone songs caught on. The Gibson Girls did nice- ly. Taude and Verne, In their topical songs and patter, take the cake. Saturday. Feb. 17, Rlnalda. the wandering violinist, and Emer- son and Baldwin, club Jugglers, will move their props In. At the Princess Theatre on Saturday, "Driving a Girl to Destruction" received all the attention It deserved from the audience. The Gaiety. Brennan's, Limited, had an overcrowded house on Feb. 10, when Bert Corrle snd Doris Baker made good. In which their dancing was excellent. The Four Chrls- sles made a big splash with acrobatic songs and dances, and landed nicely. Bert Gilbert produced a clever sketch. "The Ticket Collec- tor," with amusing results, Bert Barton as- sisting In the humorous conspiracy. Cavallerl again won applause nnd amazement by his lightning changes. Alick Lauder, brother of the great Harry, Is a tremendous favorite, and has to slug his six songs nightly. "Passers By" la running smoothly and quietly at the Royal. With only eight char- acters In the cast, and the four acts occur- ring in one setting, consistently good acting Is essential, and that Is the feature of the present company's rendition. It would be difficult to suggest on Improvement. Ai'Elawk, South Australia. "The Message from Mars," at the Royal. by Allan Hamilton's company. Is drawing packed houses. Kenneth Crampton, Robert Grelg nnd Beatrice Holloway In the lending parts. Rlckards' Tivoll carries a strong variety company. Emerson and Franks, the Val- dares. the Franz Family of Acrobats, Irene Millar, Fred Bluett, Goldle Collins, Marlowe Sisters, Willie Gardner, and few lesser lights. The King's Theatre, Brennan's, Ltd., offers Howard Bros., norland and Robinson, Maud Courtney, Verne and Armstrong, Jack Bonny, Doris Tindall. and a few others. Simmons Bros.' open air show draws the crowds during the hot weather'—110 In the shade. The company: Jules Garrison and bis Roman Mslds, Gertie McLeod, Les Mor- ton, Jolly Coleman, Howard and Palmer, Will Bobey, Emmie Hardin and Will Howard. I regret very much la having to write of the departure to-day from Sydney, by the S. 8. Makura. of Bert Levy, the Australian black and white sketch artist, who leaves for America. Some short time ago the leading press representatives of Sydney, to do honor to Mr. Levy, Invited htm to a sumptuous dinner at Paris House. The toast of the evening, "Long life and prosperity to Bert Levy," was drunk In bumpers of champagne. I may state that during Bert Levy's engage- ment In Sydney and Melbourne, under the Rlckards' management, his artistic work proved highly successful.
