14 TEEE STEW YORK OLIPPEB. January le out for some of the carnival |MHI £»t week, nnd I om convinced that WU will find a better (rod more artistic 1 rie-up pr show fronts than has been In evidence In tlie past. The Individual exhibitors of car- nival nttroctlons arc rapidly awnkenlng to the absolute necessity of really attractive banners, nnd to supply the demands upon then the banner makers are employing real artists. I may nnd that there will be a great Improvement In circus aide show fronts tbhs vear. It will add to the general appear- ance of the shows nnd is sure to Increase receipts. Good attractions and Intelligent talkers are essential to successful elde show business, hut Ihc eye must be pleased—the front is everything In drawing the dimes to the ticket box. James W. Beawb, last season dlrc'tor of privileges with the Wcldetnan Show, has been engaged in the same capacity for the Hire Bros. Colossal Shows scnBon 1018. Who Is the largest general ngent? Col. I. N. Beuor Don Carlos made a lot of money With his dog and monkey hotel, which was a feature attraction with the Herboit A. KUnc Shows last season. It has not been determined what carnival he will be with in 1018. CON T, KENNEDY SHOWS. Sounds good, don't it? And every one of Con's friends will rejoice that after many years of comparative se- clusion, his picture is to Illuminate the lithographs. There Is probably no man In the carnival ranks more popnlar than Con T. Kennedy, and he may be depended upon to uphold the dignity of the profession to which he has devoted years of practical applica- tion. May the Kennedy Shows live long and prosper! Fbank L. Albert acquired an. opal mine daring bis recent visit to Arizona. CARNIVAL PRE8S AGENTS. Much has been printed from time to time, In the amusement publications, extolling the wonderful publicity stunts pulled off by cir- cus press agents. For some reason the car- nival presB agent bos not come in for his duo share of commendation. And the car- nival press agent has done things in his timet Some of these days I Intend to de- vote some little space to a special article on carnival press work. At this time let It suffice for me to record on the roll of honor the names of those who have helped to spread the fame of carnival attractions: Louis J. Beck, Frank L. Albert, A. II, Dexter, Cap- tain Mnltlnnd. Harry Schwab, Harry Hardy, Smith Hall, Fred Vnn Slcklcn, Sum C. Hal- ler, Fred J. Worrell, Wllliom Judklus Hewitt, Dan Flshcll, Allen Dnmnby, Hnrry Rush Raver, Doc Wnddcll, Paul Blum, Kd. Robin- son. Harry Shields, J. George Loos. L. C. Zcllcno, Herman Q. Smith. Punch Wheeler, H. Guy Woodward, J. W. Moore, Chnrlcs Baker, James 8. McQuade, George L. Mac- Fa rlane, Sidney Wire, Tom North, J. Clint WlBcman, Job. S. Richards, George Enson- bergcr and J. Harry Edwards. While many of these men have not been officially designated as "press agents" In tbe entcmble of the carnival aggregation, they all have, In addition to general promotion nnd contracting, put into effect specialized Eubllclty service of a high character, and ave played no small part in the general progress of the carnival form of entertain- ment. * OF DOMESTIC MANUFACTURE. Our self-made men arc mighty scarce and many should be careful, for the result of their handiwork Is sometimes very fcnrful. But we have some who can be proud, who've had a low beginning. I pnnygerlzc quite long and loud of those now In the Inning. There's Colonel Parker, Herbert Kline and sterling Con T. Kennedy, James Patterson, who's doing fine, and Talbott (spelled with double t). There's Tommy Allen, lately wed, nnd Clarenrc Worthaai also, of whom I'.ve often beard It said he couldn't play baseball, so ha loft the diamond, field and bat, for Midway exhibition. A diamond now in bis cravat,' the world his one ambition. There's J, J. Jones, wbo'a always ont through A. T. Wright's endeavor, and Francis F., the man about whom I could write forever. Then there are others by tbe score, but lack of space behooves me to eulogize Just now no more until the spirit moves me. fConHnticd on pape 10.) ALTERATIONS ON ROOF OF NEW YORK.
