Fred Gollmar wua In Chicago last week closing up the final arrangement*, and ei- preaaed himself as highly pleased with the I made a flying trip to New York City ' last week and had the pleasure of wltnem- jnr a performance of the Barnum * Bailey Greatest Show on Earth at Madison Square garden. Some years ago I was Identified with the Barnum A Bailey Snow, and at that time thought that the extreme limit had teen reached in the way of providing circus entertainment After witnessing this season's offering at the Garden, I am convinced that great progress baa been mide. The spectacle "Cleopatra" as presented with the B. A B. Show this season is cer- tainly a wonderful affair, and were the curtain to fall upon the conclusion of this ■pectacular production and wind up the •low, the folks who have paid the price of admlaajon to the chow could not complain. They would have their money's worth. The entire Barnum & Bailey big show program is one of merit. There Is something to in- terest one all the time—a bewildering maze ol unique performances, nicely adjusted and. altogether, offering an entertainment of exceptional magnitude. It Is a pleasure to record big business at Madison Square Garden. The show certainly deserves heavy patronage. I am Inclined to believe that the season under canvas will prove a prosperous one. Stopping off at Philadelphia, on my re- tarn to Chicago. Wednesday night, 0, 1 wit- nessed the Two Bills Show, at Convention Ball. Without exaggeration. It Is fair to say, that never In the history of Wild West ex- hibitions has such a pleasing picture been afforded the patrons of this form of enter- tainment as Is presented by General W. V. Cody and Major Gordon W. Llllle, thla sea- ■on. The Convention Hall, in Philadelphia, li a vast amphitheatre. T"hr. show opens with the Far Bast, and the scenic effects are great. During the course of the performance General W. F. Cody appears In the arena behind a pair of spanking sorrels, and with appropriate remarks Introduces Major Gordon W. Llllle as his successor. RHODES WITH GOLLMAR BROS. Waiter A. Crandell, general agent of the Eschman European Shows, arrived In Chi- cago, Saturday morning, 12, and during a call at the Western Bureau of Thb Juppe*., recounted In an Interesting manner the ex- periences of his advance brigade in the Hooded districts. Mr. Crandell said: "We were detained for five days In Bvansvlllc, Ind., on account of the high waters, and finally were routed out by trolley, boat and train. It was an experience such as comes to few showmen. True It Is that us folks with the white tops have to overcome more or less Irksome obstacles In the regular rou- tine of our business, but to be enveloped in a aea of muddy watera, isolated from tho world, 1b certainly an experience never to bo forgotten." According to Mr. Crandell it will be some- time before conditions In the Indiana and Ohio flooded country right themselves. Tho Eschman advance forces were delayed so that they were but three days In advance of the show, which wsb forced to double back on its route to Kentucky, to All In an extra week, until the railroads were able to handlo the show in Illinois. The floods have coBt tho Eschman Shows a lot of money, but in spite of this decided drawback they will go on, and will play North as far as Minneapolis, where they will lay off for a week or ten days, to paint up and get the show In shape for the Summer season, which will open about May 10, at West Minneapolis. The Eschman Shows, according to Mr. Crandell, have had a very Bucceisful season so far, and big business for the balance of the tour, when normal conditions are re- sumed, is anticipated. Mi miend, Bill Rice (W. O. P.), writes me from HUlsboro, Tex., under date of April 7: "Was certainly very glad to hear of the 8. L. A going to the .front for the Wallace Circus folks. The Rice A Dore Company opened Its carnival season at DennlBon, Tex., lost Monday to good business. We have the following attractions: Rice A Dore Water Circus. Rice A Dore 20 in 1 Show, Rice A Dore Congress of Fat People, De Krekos' International Theatre, Hollaway's Motor- drome, Buggar Red's Wild West, Mae Harris' Lady Athletics, Carroll's Plantation Show, Owen's Crazy House, Peterson's Snake Farm, Presto, Illusion; Jungle Show, Freed'* New Three Abreast Carry.Cs-AU, Ferris Wheel and Circle Wave. We carry thirty-five con- ccfslons. Ward's Marine Band of sixteen pieces furnishes the music, and the Rice A Dore Shows are transported on eighteen cars. We look for a very big season." Joe Kank, who is In charge* of the door leading to the dressing room of the Coliseum, where Rlngllng Brothers' Circus holds forth, has a wide acquaintance. He has occupied thlB position for five years, and has como to know almost everybody worth numbering among circus friends. He is an affable, agree- ablo fellow, who fulfills the position, in a diplomatic manner. HARRY L. NEWTON WRITES. Hot Spbingb, Ark., April 2, 1013. Dear Bunch. —Have discovered that every- body in Hot Springs has something the mat- ter with them. If It Isn't rheumatism lt'a something else—usually something else. I find many are complaining with Bome form of stomach trouble. People have good sto- machs all right, but can't And anything to place therein. I don't mean by that that folks miss any meals, but they certainly have a lot postponed. They tell you here to drink the hot water to create an appetite. But they don't put you next as to how or where said appetite can be appeased. That seems to be one of Hot Springs' great little secrets. I've heard It said, however, that for Ave or ten plunks per diem the proprietors of the Arlington, Park or Eastman Hotels will per- mit you to pose as one of their guests, and supply you with a 1013 model bed anil some- thing cute to eat. Personally, I cannot say. I am somewhat timid about approaching strangers and, never having been Introduced lo said props., have only the word of others to go by. I know in Chicago I can live for a week on what a mere introduction would cost to one of Hot Springs' haughty land- lords. The styles In costumes never appear to vary here In the various bathing establish- ments. The prevailing attire consists of a rubber band and rusty key draped noncha- lantly about the left wrist, the other parta of your nnntomy being left to the caprices of the vapid climate. A casual scrutiny of the Imtherfl congregated will give one a line on their different personalities—there being nothing to obstruct said casual scrutiny ex- cept the articles referred to. In some dries folks mingle with society. Hero tbey mingle with your money. Have been In the habit of carrying a handkerchief in my right hip pocket and my bank roll In left hip pocket They being placed thus to be handy In case of need; the right hand being more dexterous than the left; and the handkerchief the article I waa called upon to use the moro frequently of the two. Very well. On arriving In Hot 8prlngs I waa forced to switch positions of the articles, placing money in right hip pocket and hankie In left, eo that the right hand could live up to its reputation. And the good right hand made good. The second day I left hankie home and carried lank roll unconcealed In right hook, permitting natives to imbibe AT LAST! Buckley, the well known pro- moter, and John Evans, manager of the Coli- seum, Deo Moines, la., have Just closed the most successful Household Show In tho his- tory of the State, at Dos Moines, for tho Women's Club there. Opening March 20, the exposition was con- tinued till April 5, when a meeting of tho exhibitors unanimously requested that It be kept open another week. Thla waa not dono on account of the various attrnctlone, princi- pal among which was the Fcrullo Hand, being booked eltiewbcro and the management wcro unable to Oil in suitable features for the fol- lowing week. It was, however, decided to make the nlfalr an annual one, and many of the exhibitors at onco roscrved apace for the coming year. Not an inch of ooor space was vacant at the show, and It was both a financial and artistic success In every way. The exhibitors were much pleased with the publicity and advertising tbey obtained from the ahow, and the attendance, although hampered by some Inclement weather, was a record for this class of attraction In Dcs Moines. The exposition enjoyed State wide adver- tising anil newapapcr publicity, the publicity end being in the hands of Dick Collins, the well known exposition press agent, who has been with Mr. Buckley at many of the big world'a fairs.
