Bob Van Oaten, the well known burlesque comedian, died May 8 In St. Luke's Hospital, Red llank, N. J., and was burled May 10 In tbe Hart plot In Fair Haven, N. J. Mrs. Fred. Blder and Annie Hart -were with him when tbe end came. . . „ Bob Van Oaten was one of the leading comedians of tbe burlesque world. He made tis first appearance at the Old Venetian The- atre, New Orleans, La., over forty years ago, when W. B. Floyd was the manager of that house, as Henry, with Joseph Jefferson» "Kip Van Winkle" Co. Later he appeared with Mary Scott 8lddons, In stock, at tbo Varieties Theatre, New Orleans; with Oliver Doud Byron, with the Alice Oates Opera Co., as comedian. He also appeared In the leading variety theatres of America, the team being Van Osten and Clark. In 1883 he Joined Sam T. Jack's Lily Clay Co., at "Fatty" Stewart's Theatre, Philadelphia, He was then principal comedian at 8am T. Jack's Theatre, Chicago, for a number of years, Inter appearing In vaudeville, as Van and Vera, for F. F. Proctor. In 189T he joined Harry Morris' Little Lambs Co.: then the Al. Beeves company, and in 1001 was engaged by Robert Manchester for bis Cracker Jacks, remaining with them until 1907. For seasons 1008-09 he was under contract with Charles B. Arnold for tbe Serenade™ Co. Mr. Van Osten's fan-making propensities were of a peculiar kind, bis peculiar nose make-up causing him to be billed as "The Man with the Duck BUI." He was the son of Annie Vaughn, known ns the original Topsy; a nephew of Alice Oates, tbe famous operatic star, and of James J. Oates, tbe actor and manager. Last season Mr. Van Oaten was with the Midnight Maidens. "Chuck" Connors. George Washington Connor, better known alone New York'* Bowery for many yeare es "Chuck" Connors, died in the Hudson Street Hospital, In this city, Saturday. May 10. ■ "Cluck" Connors was a typical product of the old Bowery, having been born in tbls city flfty-slxjesrs ago. He gained title to "Mayor of Chinatown," and ■attained fame showing parties through the Chinese section. "Chuck 1 ' Connors bad a "big, soft heart" within his rough make-up, and was highly thought of by the inhabitants and visitors of Chinatown. Connors' first appearance on the stage wta In 1897, when he danced with Anna Held. A few months later he went on tour at the head of "hit own" company, In a melodrama, called "On the Bowery/' A year or so after- ward he was starred In "From Broadway to the Bowery." FIELD Greater 27 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS SUCCESS 27 Berths Stark, well known in musical circles of South Bend, IndL, tor many years as the leader and director of the Orpbeom Theatre Orchestra, died at her home, 810 Vistula Avenue, In that city, May 10, follow- ing an operation at the Bpworth Hospital, May 8. Miss Stark was born in Cleveland, O., Oct 8, 1878. and went to South Bend with her parents when nut a baby. She showed remarkable ability as a singer as she grew. When a young woman she studied and became a music instructor and directed the orchestra at the opening of the Indiana Theatre, in -South Bend. She went to the Orphcum when It opened, and remained there up until the time of the operation. Besides being an expert musician Miss Stark pos- sessed an extremely fine soprano voice, and appeared several times before audiences of South Bend. Besides her father she Is sur- vived by two sisters, Clara Stark and Mrs. Joseph Horenn, and a brother, William. Jacob Johnson, stage manager of the Lyceum Theatre, Washington, D. C, died In that city from cancer'May 7, at the George Washington University Hospital. Mr. John- son was fifty-five years of age. He went to Washington from Baltimore, Md., In 1883, with Hughey Kernan and Myer Fisher, to open Kernun's Theatre, then known as the Comltiuc. He superintended the erection of the present building. Mr. Johnson Is sur- vived by a brother, Harry Johnson, of Balti- more, and two nieces. The deceased's name was the third to be signed to the charter of Washington Eagles, and he was nleo an Elk for thirty-four years. Funeral services were held May 0 from St. Patrick's Catholic Church, In Washington, and a delegation of Washington Acrlo or Eagles escorted the body to tho Union Station, whence it was taken to Baltimore, where representatlvca of the Elks took charge of the funeral, and tho ramclns were Interred In that city May 11. Philip Staats was stricken suddenly with heart fatluro and died at tho Hotel Kernan in Baltimore, Md., May 11. Mr. Staats played the Maryland Theatre last week, and on Saturday nigbt, 10, bad on attack of Indigestion, but retired feeling nil right. Sunday morning, howovcr, ho had a severe coughing spell, after which he com- plained of pains in the region of bis heart. He was preparing to leave Baltimore that afternoon wh»n tho attack enmo over him, and he died within a few minutes. In his room at ihe Kernan a note was found saying that if anything happened to blm to notify bis wife, at 200 West One Hundred and Sixth Street, New York City. Gene W, Newton, a well known violin- ist, aged twenty years, died of heart failure May 6, nt Wyoming, 111. Mr. Newton had been leader for several organizations through the West, his last appearance being In that capacity with the McSenton Orchestra, at the State Theatre, in Wyoming. The re- mains were taken to Vienna. IU., his home, for burial. He was well liked by all who knew him, and bad gained many pleasant friendships throughout the profession. Mnarlee Evans, aged forty-four years, who has been a theatrical manager for the Sbubcrti for the past three years, died sud- denly of heart failure May 13, In his apart- ment at the Hotel Calvert, Forty-first Street nr.d Broadway.
