Hkar Colonel. —Laying aside our long friendship, nosing unbiased ns a rank out- sider, I wish to congratulate you upon the additional honor added to your war bonnet of scalps—that of being selected as president of The Showmen's League of America. In this connection, too, I feel constrained to congratulate tho League upon its choice, and I will. -Through a close friendship of half a century I know you probably better than most members of the League. I have seen you tried. I have seen you proved true, and never had occasion to blush for my pard. from my viewpoint I feel that this move— tbe formation ot this League—is the start of a grand organization for tbe uplift and help of tho knights of the arena, who hare so long contributed to the world's pleasure; and, further, I feel that it will give the generous nnd big-hearted public of America a chance to come hack for the many and large open- handed charities our suffering people nave re- ceived at the bands of you and your brothers of the big top in times of great calamities— the Jolitttown flood, the San Francisco earth- quake, famine, fires, etc. The cry has gone up for aid, and the first to respond were the show people. ■ Now that you arc organized to take care ot your suprrununtcd ministers of fun, you will rind a grateful public ready to make you incrense the seating capacity when tbe bene- fit for The Showmen's League is on the bill- boards. When n man's in bis prime in the sawdust ring lie's greeted with a shout, Bur who takes care of his faltering steps When he is down and out?
