Estimates were Invited last week fur an exten- sive reconstruction of the Chestnut Street Opera House, which has been taken over by the Loew- Nlxon-Nlrdllnger Syndicate. The familiar old front is to be entirely taken down and a new one erected, which will stand five feet further back on the new street line. There will also be a number of interior changes made. The conditions are about the same as list week —extremely hot weather and very little business with tho houses In town, but the beaches and the rustic theatres are certainly having their Innings. Already preparations are being made for the Fall season, and the wise ones predict the opening will be a banner ooe as the attractions listed amonx the fall openings are many of tbe biggest suc- cesses that have been seen In New York during the past season. Labor Day will find all the theatres In line. Tbe new Cort Theatre, which Is In pro- cess of construction, will probably have Ita first performance by Jan. 1, at tbe latest. The new Wilbur Theatre may be ready by September, as the work on that house Is being rapidly pushed. Plymouth iFred Wright, mgr.)—The Eleanor Gordon Players, under the management ot Wyrley Birch, began the second and laat week of their suc- cess, "The House Next Door," June 30, and tbe performance slmwed new excellences, due, no doubt, to the polish of a week's work with the play. A big outdoor carnival was held at Newton, Mass., July 4 and S, and proved to be tbe biggest thing In the amusement line tbe city has ever seen. The W. H. Green Vaudeville Agency, of this city supplied the following big features: Prof. Smart's Big Plantattn Show, Odarlan's Pig Outdoor Carnival, consisting of two-beaded boy, snake pit, Madame Aman. Orients dancer: Aerial La Rue, Odar's Comedy Dogs, and several of the newest games that have ever btcn seen at a carnival in New England. The Green Vaudeville Agency bas also several other contracts for carnivals in tbla Slate dur- ing the Summer months. These carnivals are becoming very popular. Tub Washington and Hub Theatres are closed for repairs, and will not be reopened until early Fall. Bim.ie O'CONNELL and the Flnlay Girls, daugh- ters of Flnlay and Burke, have been In tbe provinces for over twenty weeks, and expect to remain there Indefinitely. The act had been very successful In tbe vaudeville houses In that part of the country. The "pop" concerts closed a very profitable season July 3.
