(Continued from page A J "THE WILL" AMD "THE HRAHNY OF TEARS/' Empire (Thomas Shea, bos. mgr.)— The Wilt, a comedy In one act by J. M. Barrie. Produced by Cbarlea Kronman on Monday night, Sept 20, with this cast: Mr. Devizes Sr Prank Kamble Cooper Mr. Devizes Jr Fred Eric Philip Boss.. John Drew Surteea Sidney Herbert Sennet Walter Soderllng Creed Murray ftoss Mrs. Boss Mary liolaud Charles Frohman presented for the first time In America on the above mentioned date James M. Barrle's playlet, "The W11L" It Is In three sections and one scene, showing the law offices of Devizes, Devizes A De- vizes. "The Will" Is a comedy of much charm, and teaches us that money cannot buy happiness. The lines are. saturated with satire, and "Jere and there Is a touch of pattoe. Of humor there 1b a generous sprink- ling. In short. Mr. .Barrie e playlet Is a success of the first water. John Drew plays the role of Philip Boss. He la first seen as a young man, then as middle aged, and lastly, as a man about sixty years old The action takes place 'In the law office of Devizes, Devises A Devises. It lsnlalnly furnished, and a portrait of Queen victoria bangs on the wall. To the office comes Philip Boss and his wife for the purpose of making his will. He Is a clerk and his worldly goods are very small. His young wife weeps every time the lawyer mentions the words death and widow. She Is a simple and innocent young woman, whoso sole ob- iect In life appears to make her husband inppy. Ten years pass and Boss and his wife are again lu the dingy law office. They come to make a new will. The wall this time la decorated by the portrait of King Edward. This time the wife Is not so foolish. Ten Sears ago she wlsbed her husband to leave Is little money to relatives and hospitals, now'shc wants It all for herself. Boss had In the meantime developed into a rich and conceited business man. More years Lave been chopped off Father Time, and Boss Is now a man of title, a millionaire and a widower. - Bis son and daughter have turned out badly. He tells the lawyers who are, of course, now old men, that he has everything In the world hot happiness, and like many others he has discovered that It cannot be bought. The lawyer gases sadly upon the portrait of King George as Boss, a broken hearted old man, leaves his office. Mr. Drew gave the audience a genuine war- frlse with his three Impersonations. As loss when a young man, he looked the Lon- don clerk, and his facial features were so chanced that Ms voice only betrayed him. He also completely changed his appearance when Boss reached middle awe, and in the last scene, as the old and neb Sir Philip B ss s , he decs a bit of emotional work that completely surprised his audience. In short It was a genuine night of trtamp& for Mr, Drew. Mary Poland, a* Mrs. Boss, gave two vastly different impersonations. In scene one she played well the shrinking, Bby little wife In fear of death, and ten years later she looked and acted the woman of the world In a masterful manner. Frank Kcmblo Cooper, as the lawyer, whose life wbb shown from middle age to eenlllty, gave a splendid performance. Pair work was dono by Fred. Eric, who played the role on* Ma son and law partner. "The Will" was preceded by a Haddon Chambers' clever comedy. "The Tyranny of Tears," originally played by Mr. Drew about twelve years ago. The cast on Monday even- ing was as follows: Mr. Parbury John Drew George Gunning Julian L'Eetrange Col. Armltago Herbert Druco Evans Walter Soderllng Miss Hyacinth Woodward Mary Poland airs. Parbury Laura Hope Crews Mr. Drew was; of course, thoroughly at hosss In his old role of Clement Parbury, playing It with ease and distinction. Laura Hope Crews, as his wife, scored again In a comedy role, and Mary Poland lent ber charming personality to the role of Miss Woodward, a part which makes little demands upon her talents. Julian L'Bstrange was pleasantly east sa George Gunning and Herbert Druee, as CoL Amltage, contributed much to the enjoyment of tbc comedy. The author, C Haddon Chambers, bowed his thanks but refused to taako a speech. sssssast l ColutabU (J. Herbert alack, mgr.)—.41. Reeve?
