The hill for Bept, 25-27 Included entertain- ing acts of variety. {Lawrence, Coglilan and company played an episode wherein a crook called for a package of money wJIch had been sent to a lawyer by a corporation, against which ho was conducting- a suit for damages, lie had sold out his client who was his own type- writer, The crook tells tbe girl of the double deal. Tho lawyer arrives and la taken to task by the girl. He denies, tout Is forced to give up the package by tho crook, wjo hid behind the screen. The girl having previous- ly removed the money from the envelope, tbe crook gets the envelope only, while the girl having been ordered from the office by tlio lawyer, takes tho money with her. There la plenty of holding action throughout. Lewis and MoClurc, a male and a female "college nut," snng, danced and made funny nolncs, which amused. Tho girl is very thin, and In stripes looked thinner still. They sang "Minstrel Band," -and finished with parodies on "Kentucky Days" end '^Bumble Bee." Tbo Zara Carmen Trio have a well trained Btablo of hoops, and easily made them be- have, sending them around tie stage and into their quarters at will. Their lively baton juggling was also well liked. A trick of bouncing one hoop successively on tbrco different ropes came off nicely. Tho two ladles wero there with all tho necessary action, Thompson and Kent played two unsuccess- ful soubrettcs expecting a vaudeville agent to call on them with some contracts. One of the', ladles sings "Last NlgCit" in good voice, and the other in ditto, "Not a Poor Little Girl Like Me." When the door bell rings they start to sing "Bailing Down Mo- bile Bay,' 1 furiously in ragtime, and tbe fur- niture men arrive Instead of the booking agent, and la ragtime remove all the fur- nishings. The Von Shlllaghs, a woman vocalist and mnn violinist in a white drcsB suit, enter- tained with high class musical offerings. They start with opera, get to ragtime and fopular music, and then finish' with selco- lon» from "Faust" in clever Btyle. Tho lady gave a splendid rendition of "When I Lost You." Prcd W. Morton, an expert on tho mouth harmonica, Juggled and played these wind Instruments with, and without the use of hands, giving Imitations of babies, cats and concertinas. 'Ho tlu-u started a paper tear- ing stunt, resulting in a fine tidy with k'fterhig. ■ . 'Morgan, Chester and company had a sketch located in a Herman cobbler shop. The cob- <bler's adopted child falls heir to a big sum of money, a confidence woman triea to palm herself off as tbe mother, <but is foiled at tho finish by the cobbler, as a policeman, armed in exaggerated fasalon. The Martha Washington Sextette In Co- lonial headdress and -beautiful gowns. In which tho silt is rather bringing the old and the new together, sang and played piano and harp. In front of a fine blue curtain, mnklng a pretty setting. Then soprnno solos, duets and sextette vocal offerings, notably tho "Blue Danube," wero all well received, also "Olvo Mo. Just a Little Smile." A harp solo was well played. At tho finish, they all changed to White. • Tho pictures were well received, and In- clude: "8tudy of Snakoi," "Auto Polo," "Rnsy Money." "A Cambodian Idyll" and "Tho Other Womnn." "LA GIOCONDA/' Century Opera House.—The second week of the grand opera season at this house, under tho management of Milton and Sargent Aborn, began on Tuesday night, Bopt. 28. with a performance of Ponchlelll's opera of "La aioconda," given in English, with the following cast: La aioconda. '. Lois Dwell La Cleca Katelccn Howard Alvlao Badoero....., Alfred Kaufman IJiurn. Mary Jordan Knzo -Urlmaldo .....Gustaf Bergman Itnrnnlm Louis Ereldler i u PIU>t} ' Hu « h Schusiler Iscpo ..Vernon Dalhart The same opera was given from Tuesday to Saturday, inclusive, tie alternate artists la tbo lending roles for Wednesday night, 24, being Elizabeth Amsden, as La Gloconda; John Bardsley, as Onto Orlmaldo, nnd TIios. Chalmers, as Barnaba; tbe remainder of tho cast being tho same as on Tuesday night. The second week of the grand opera opened very auspiciously, there being but few vacant seats in the orchestra and second balcony, though there were many vacant scats In the first balcony. This mny be accounted for by the fact what may be termed tho new clientele of the opera houso Is not familiar with the opera of "La Qioconda," or It may be Its melo- dramatic flavor does not appeal to the great mass of opera lovers. The production, however, would compare very favorably with tho splendid presenta- tion of "Aldtt" tho preceding week. The staging of its four acts was presented In attractive form. Alfred Sicndrcl again demonstrated his ability as a conductor, and fully Justified the praise accorded him during tbe first week's performances, and tho princi- pals, If wo may except a few slight discrepan- cies here and there, gave a splendid account of themselves in the lending roles. The score had been carefully prepared, and tho performance, as a whole, was one which added to tbe credit already gained by tbe new Institution. The title role was finely acted and sung by Lois Ewell, though there were occasions during the opera, calling' for dramatic Inten- sity that were slightly beyond her. Louis Kreldler's excellent voice was heard with pleasure. In the music of Barnaba. ' Kathleen Howard, as La Cleca, the blind mother, gave a most commendable interpreta- tion of the role, her rich contralto voice af- fording an actual musical treat. Gustaf Bergman, while displaying nn ex- cellent stage presence and dramatic lntclll- €ence In tho role of Orlmaldo, failed, at lines, In hie English enunciation, and his voice was taxed by the strain of the long phrases. • (Mnry Jordan gave a pralsworthy Interpre- tation of Laura, tho wife of Badoero. Carlo Nicosia alternated during the week In the conductor's chair with Alfred Sicn- drcl. On Monday night, Sept. 20, "La Gloconda" was given in Italian. "Talcs of Hoffman," in English, will bo given "for the rest of the week. Old Timer.
