On the d»y the Board of Pardon meets, the GoTernor In requested by the so-called "boss," who elected turn, to Issue a pardon for a jonng man serving a terra for killing the boss' son. At the moment the ccnvlct wss to leave prisoner, the Governor waa to telephone that tho pardon was a mistake, m order to cause addi- tional agony to the victim and his mother. The Governor signs the pardon. The mother of the convict just then succeeds la seeing too Governor, as she enters in the disguise of a scrubwoman, Informs him that the deed was committed In self- defense, snd that she had been prevented from testifying by the boss. The Governor then In- forms the boas that the pardon will stand. A little gunplay, which seems entirely out of place, ensues, but the Governor's secretary gets the drop on the boas. The old lady gets the pardon, and the boss Is lav!ted forcibly to get oat of the Governor's office. The playlet Is forceful, along the lines of stellar other such episodes, and sir. Hart and hU associates pat It over la a gripping manner. The threats of the boas seem to be par- ticularly apropos la the light of a present day condition. Halle? and Nobles, Including Hr. Bailey, form- erly of Halley and Meehsn, la a hideously fanny mcke-up, and his charming partner, Una Nobles, bad an effective set, wherein Hr. She arrives at the merchant's shop sfter an exciting taxleab adventure with an American, Hunter UrJohn, who la also dlstlncuished as s mixer, though on lines different from those of the French merchant. He onrsaes her to the shop, when he meets the scapegrace son of a rich Eng- lishman, who Is hiding from parental wrath as s singer in "The Garden of Birds." The young Englishman bsa brought to the merchant's shop a blue bird, whose color It supposed to excite tho divine spark. Jane and UpyobD, the latter of whom la colorblind, each get a peek at the bird, and Its Influence affects them In decidedly different ways, which lead to no end of merry corofillcatloaa and fun.
