Western.Ofiice 1 ■ AT THE HUDSON, UNION HILL. Qua Edwards was the first reason of our making a consecutive weekly Journey to yo distant shores of Jersey last Thursday even- ing, Oct. 23. The other two reasons were Ms new girl act, "The Ladles' Mud," and l'hll Qurblcb, Qua' clever and spectacled private secretary and nil around feller, who thought enough of this new beauty vaudeville tiling to have us take a peek at It early, even If It were 'way over on Union Hill, where, at the Hudson Theatre, you aro mado to overlook the trials of the trip by the capable aud genial manager of Chat theatre "on llio blulT," Joseph It. Bmllb, The evening's happenings began right from the curb In front of the Astor Theatro build- ing, where Qua IMwards' offices are decorated with pictures of the once Blonde Typewriters (Including Lillian Walker's dimpled coun- tenance). The Kdwards big Simplex car, directed by Mrs. Qua, started chugging and, after doing the ferry trick and cllniblue. the Town of union, to tho theatre tbat might not nave been bad there been no guy to ills- "ovcr the present stream known as the Hud- son ltlver, the "little half dozen" blew away from the Joy rider and four of 'em (tho Messrs. Vinton, Qurblch, Merrill and yours truly) visited Mother Clcary's cats place and immediately got busy romping through a few orders of ''ham an —having previously bid farewell to Mrs. 12. and nopiiew, Chester Itobluaon. From hero It was decided to give Union I 11111 "thanks for the lobster" (new stuff), | so It was back to tbe "Simp," and the old hill never before got Buck an examination since It Qrst persuaded Itself to create a population nod take a chance at becoming a metropolis. Afler tho trip back to Joe Smith's theatre and tho roll call of "The Ladles' Man" troupe had bceu correctly answered to by Will J. Ward, the Gordon hoys and Irene Murtln. Qenc Ford. Delia Couuor, Knthcrlne and Henrietta Gilbert, Adelaide Adrian, Hetty Hudron (no relation to the theatre) and Marguerite Dana, we seated our ambitious reives among the II111 folk out front Juit In time to Bee the Two Alfreds onen the show with their real classy hand to bend and head to head balancing specialty. This European duo are smooth workers, nnd make the many difficult stunts they do appear' easy. The "population" gave vent to their feeling* for the Alfred boys with loud and long upproval when they closed the act, head to head, one playing rauudollu aud the other a guitar Jack lloyce, an only fair English singing comedian, in frock coat costume, followed, cud. with a routine of ancient chatter aud songs, went over in a surprising manner. Jack will have to fine-comb nls material be- fore he can hope to "get by" across from tbe Jersey side. In number three position was an act Oiling in for James Callahan and company. The stage card read "Ktngsley Benedict and com- fiany, in 'Ancestors.'" Tbe plot of this very un- □terestlngly presented sketch centred around the health of Holly, who wished to grab off Kosle for his wife. But Rosle's father would not consent to slip Rosle to htm until h« had thoroughly been "put wise" to what caused the death of Sol's ancestors. Everything was finally "beaten out" between tbe parents of tbe young couple as to the "perfect health" of Sol, ana when Rosle and Solly eased It that they had been married "a fortnight ago," Solly's old man turned him over his knee tor a laugh at curtain time. The com- pany Included four men and one young woman, and tbe only one who dldn t use Yiddish English was tbe "bridegroom." Ilosle wore a "silt" skirt that showed most, of a pair of clean white stockings. And "they" were all that entertained Manager Smith's patrons In this act on this particular Thursday evening. "Damaged Goods" was even quoted during it to make sure that we didn't allow the idea of the thing to go over our heads. Tbe Seven Mischief Makers followed and, although the act Is "carried" by tbe youug chap In a Jewish scholar part, one of tbe girls, a "prop" blonde, sang "There's a Qlrl In the Heart of Maryland In a real sweet soprano voice, and snowed sbo possessed a wee bit more personality than her sister kid- dles, to help make the number, "go" better. Otherwise It la tbe same old brand of s'ap- stlck comedy, enforced with a newspaper held In tbe bands of an only fair Gorman comedian as the teacher. The Jew comedian Is a capable lad and should be grabbed by someone and used to advantage for both the boy and the "grabber." It was a long stretch between tho Two Alfreds and Roy Cummlngs and Helen Qlady- Ings, who followed the mischievous kids' skit, but they were worth tbe waiting. Roy and Helen nave been regular entertainers with their polite song and dance offering for some time, out now their specialty Is In <.-uch tip-top shape nnd re-arranged In such "*»yle" as to nave it classed among tin- more modern dancing duos; So their present act is more fully reviewed under our New Acts column In this Issue. They were solid favorites when they ceased. After "tbe seventh," or intermission had allowed tho unlonltea to spread themselves, Hayes and Alpolnt, a German comedian and a dwarf, in "baby'' make-up, billed as 'The Long and Short of It," resumed tiling.) and aroused some amusement with their rough and tumble specialty. Clark and Verdi, the straight and comedy "Wops from Bunny Italy," brought cibsb back to the bill with their "different" line of entertainment, and made themselves worthy of the "next to closing" Job. They are good performers and their material is ar-nppy, while the "tight" bit is as funny as ever. Then the reason,—"The Ladies' Man," fea- turing Will J. Ward, tbe clever pianist and singer, who was most recently seen with the "Five Melody Maids and a Man" In vaude- ville, and that talented girlie, Irene Martin. The act Includes eight charming girls who know bow to carry classic wearables, and the two dancing Gordon boys, who once upon a time cavorted alongside of Eddie Lco-wrd. This la Qus Edwards' latest, and though still "In tbe rough," shall be whipped Into shape soon and become a money maker for him. He showed his usual touch of ability to pick beautiful girls for this "Ladles' Man" minia- ture musical production, and staged it ac- cordingly. The act la In two scenes, (ind- well, you can see a full review of all the dolnga In It under our New Acts In this issue. It was a big nlgbt for Union Hill, and all the folks wondered who the "foreigners" were aB we hiked our humble selves In the direction of "the lane of lanes." Tod. »« » MOOSCR IN CALIFORNIA. George Mooser, general manager for Oliver Morosco, left on Friday for California on a brief trip of consultation w'th the producer of "Peg o' My Heart." En route to Los Angeles, Mr. Mooser will pay brief vlsltj of inspection to "Tbe Bird of Paradise," in which Lenoro Ulrleh Is winning many lau- rels; to "The Tik-Tok Man of Oi," which has been Morosco's successful road musical production after a Summer's run In Chicago, and to the second trial production of 'Help Wanted,' which was put on at San Fran- cisco's Alcaxar Theatre last Monday night, and which seems to have scored high success. Mr. Mooser will return via tbe routes of ueveral of tbe numerous "Pegs," and expects to bring back Bome Important Morosco an- nouncements for New York. NOTICE . In Paris Mr. Savage completed "f<i D S£ ments for the presentation there of Excuse Me," the farce by Rupert Hughes, produced by him in this country. The project, J» says, baa aroused an unusual amount of Interest among Parisian theatregoers, because of the expressed determination of bacsa Goltry, author and actor, to play the part w tbe negro porter.
