IiOUls Beeves Harrison constructed the scenario of thj picture version, w!.lr!i was made under the direction of Lnrry MeC.Ill for the Life Photo Film Corporation Tho opening Is novel, - a prelude being offered In which McUlll Is shown assigning iho various players their respective pans, in presenting the aforesaid Introduction Larry Motilll doesn't overlook it bet for a little acting himself, grabbing off the centre and holding It throug.-iout. Numerous com- pluluts have been heard from M. I', directors In the pnst owing to the fact that, wlillo they bore tbe brunt of producing a picture, they received 111 tic or no recognition or pub- licity. Larry has solved [be problem tip- parcntly. At any rnte, his method ot Intro- ducing the diameters Is far superior to the usual conventional bowing before u black curtain and "fading out." The scenario by Harrison is only futr, taking for granted Miat the director followed It without deviation. The treatment of tho counter-plot Is very poor. This causes the .story to lack con- tinuity at times. The action, according to the dramatic version, starts In San Fran- cisco, where Louis Fcllman (the Greyhound) Is living with Ills wife and causing the poor woman many a sleepless night by bis all 'round low-browed deportment, lie Is a whiskey tlend, gambler «m! o.«iimi apparently lacking all principle. Sort of a "had boy beyond redemption. Thinking to rid himself of his bettor half "The Greyhound" ciitem Into a suicide pact with tils wife. He tricks ber into drinking what be thinks Is .poison, which she evidently has laid In a supply of with the intentlou of committing a "solo" suicide. FeMman barely escapes arrest In a gambling house raid, the scene of whloh Is laid iu 'Frisco. Incidentally the "cops" wenr New York Po- lice Department I'lvlforim He enters the house where poor v/Ifey Is cogitating seri- ously whether nh'e will live or die, mid de- clares, via a sub-tlflo. that he bus decided to end M all. She says "If you go, mc too," or words to tint effect. Here Is shown the vllencsa of tho man. 'Two glnit.se* arc filled with the supposed "end it all" stuff. She drinks hcr's, but lie slyly empties bis on the floor. Old stuff, torsi Itut It Isn't poison at all, bless your henrt, no! Tho druggist noticing the lady's agitation when she sought to buy the ■rtuff. has only given her a harmless tonic of same sort. 'Jtlils we find out through tihe doctor who Is called by one McSherry. programmed as "an agent of the eye." whomever flint Is. Mac is a dotcc- t've, whether, "link," "Holmes," "Burn*" or official is not gleaned from the proceedings. Willie not engaged hi detecting Mac spends lil» time thinking of Claire Fellnrm. Although the scenario doesn't show It, 'WO accept the fact that he is a former admirer. Remember, even though FcHman, the gam- bler, doesn't treat bis wife any too nicely, she If a married woman. In our best little social circles It is not considered good form (or gentlemen to call on mesdano.es while hubby is out, especially if tbe caller be re- ceived in the bedroom. Possibly forgetting the conventions, McSberry calls anyhow, not once but frequently. He is on one of these consolation visits to his former sweetheart when he ■performs the abovementloned ser- vice of securing the doctor. 'The Grey- hound" decides to "bent" it for Europe. •Whispering Alec," "Tho Pale Face Kid" and "Deep Sea Kitty," his comrades in crime, accompany him. Learning .that Mrs. l-'osler Allen, Porter Allen, her sod. Bess Allen, her daughter, end Bob Meade, tbe daughter's unwelcome suitor, will sail an a certain boat, the gamblers decide to gather in a Utile small change via the good old s'-ort card method. How they inveigle the son into a poker gome and how tho quartette eventually lose out 1b very well depicted. MeSlierry and "The Greyhound's" wife have taken pa usage (Individually, it is sup- posed) on the self same liner. McSherry to capture the villainous "Greyhound." end Mrs. I'ellman for tho purpose of confronting .sold villain with bis infamy. This is all t'flduallv unfolded, with a IcMMMtl nt the finish that is hardly unexpected. In which I'oliman. who Is endeavorlrg to take a pot slot with his revolver at tho detective who, «tiy the way. has had him placed in Irons but not searched, sees what no believes is Ms wife's ghost, and giving up la despair, does a llrodlo over tlic side of flic shop. A bad man's end! sayctli you. But everybody clso is happy, so what's the odds. Hob Mendo wins the wealthy Miss Allen, and Mrs. Fell- uinn changes her married name for the more Celtic one of MoSlict-ry. The photography for the belter part is llr.it class. Tho sub-titles with dialogue token verbatim from the play, arc well printed and Interesting. As far as the vbnmllzatlon goes the story lacks sus- pense, but Is fairly hftereetlng throughout. -Several small details In the producing end were overlooked. Notably In the presenta- tion of flashes of a newspaper which was supposed to be held hy the polished villain or someone equally rehired, but when shown ns an Invert plainly displayed the much buttered thumb of the property man, which, when photographed and shown several times its normal size In a "cloec-up," disclosed sev- eral brands of real estate underneath the thumbnail. The camera is exceedingly truthful, There are numerous good dramatic situa- tions In the photoplay, excellently enacted by a well balanced cast. Wm. II. Tookcr. ns the Greyhoxtod, played with liilclllgvnce nnd Inherent histrionic ability, but Mr. Tookcr is far from tho type that should have been selected for the role, which colls for a slender, lithe, sinuous per- son. Mr. Tookcr is neither, rather approach- ing the (apposite In ovolrduuols. Harry Splng'.er. despite tiic fact that tho director allowed bun ao wenr a silk Mat on shipboard, and who, for some reason or other, in this picture mndc up lira eyes far too heavily, renders- n fine performance oil "Whispering Alec." Splnglcr is an excellent actor nnd avoids over playing throughout. He Is the cool gambler to the life. David Wail, ns McSherry, does nobly with thv con- ventional situations tluvt fall to hl« lot Mr. Wall makes the ttOBt of a stagy detective, that in less exi>e?lenccd bonds might appear ridiculous. Then there Is Catherine Carter, as Claire Fcllman. Wluit a crackerjacic emo- tional screen aolrees this woman Is. What alone. In which she enters Into the suicide pact with her villainous husband. Is one of the most delicate played and artistically acted bits seen in many a long day. Ellta Proctor Otis, always a sterling actress, plays "Deep Sea Kitty," but has few opportunities. Her make-up, seemingly, was not motion plctury. It didn't register well for aome reason or other. Several clever photographic double expo- sures enhance the value of tbe picture, but if it were not for that excellent cost of actors, mis-cast even as several are, "The Greyhound" In pictures would be rather drab entertainment. /»a> "THE SPITFIRE" (4 REELS). B. Dunn Annt Mary Lois Arnold Polly June Dale An excellent film version of Edward Peple's comedy drama, "The Spitfire," was presented for press inspection Tuesday, June 23, at the Famous Players' Studio. The story, which follows closely the lines of the play,' deals with the adventures of Bruce Morson, a young American, who, in returning from his travels In Egypt, is robbed of some valuable jewels- in a London hotel. Be learns that the thieves are on board the yacht "Spit- fire," at Calais, which they have taken pos- session of by means of orders forged by the butler'of the owner, Marcus Glrard. Morson manages, by a ruse, to get aboard, and falls In love with Valda, Girnrd's pretty daughter, who is also, a "spitflrc." Tbe thieves, bow- ever, turn her against Morson by telling her he Is a .customs officer, and give her the Jewels, which, they claim, her father Is try- ing to smuggle Into the country. The girl puts the Jewels into a safe, and orders Mor- , son to be put in seaman's costume and work his passage home. The "villains", steal the Jewels again, this time throwing suspicion upon Morson. However, after a series of complications, . all ends happily. Morson heroically rescues Valda from, the burning yacht, recovers the jewels and wins the woman he loves. Carlyle Blackwell, as Bruce Morson, did splendid work. The thieves were, J?erhapn, a little too melodramatic. Scenes orintense dramatic Interest were the fight between - Morson and the robbers, which takes place , in the dark, and the spectacular burning of tbe ship. Morson, working on the yacht, furnishes the comedy of the play In excellent fashion. Davtel FrtOHnAN Presents Tie Greatest q(* Motion. Rduro Stars ,A Story of* Stirring .-.
