THE NEW YORK CLIPPER. V The program tM* week ranges from circus to grand opera, with plenty of good, vrbole- jooie variety acta that really walked away villi the hits of the show on Monday. The first appearance- In vauderlflo of Cart Jorn. tenor of the Metropolitan Opera Hoiidc. was very aosplcloas,' a tremendous amount of applause oelng given him as he made his appearance. (See New Acts.) Evelyn Neshit. assisted by Jack Clifford, presented their singing and dancing specialty with good resultH. Miss Nesblt had the honor of Introducing "Tho Little House Upon the Ulll" with tie assistance of the Harmony Qoartette. The song is the latest to make tin appearance, and if applause coants fur anything It Is destined to become as large a tilt as "Lonesome Pine." Miss Nesblt also rendered another number that was well put over.' Her dauclng with Mr. Clifford was easily the feature of ihelr performance, aud vvent over big. Ben Byan and Harriet Lee, In their com- edy skit 1 , "You've Spoiled It," went even bet- ter than on their first appearance here several months ago. NeUl» V. Nichols, the clever singing come- dienne, captured one of the hits of the bill. She opened with a number called "Dance, Dance, Dance," which immediately put her in favor •with the audience. An Irish and Scotch number was given next, and proved that the possessed versatility. An Italian character number, in which she Introducea "Whfn rno'ro a Long, Long Way from Home," was her beat offering. "Will 8ome- Cub v. Mom, mob.) one Name My Nationality" was also a nlc encore winner. "One Hundred Tears Ago/ her last song, was pat over In the regular Nichols style, and was good for several Down. Blckal and Watson, also playing a return cnengpment here, cleaned up with their clever musical travesty. Rrnndon Hurst, assisted by Frank Dekum and \\m. H. Conlcy, presented a time-worn sketch called "The Girl," and Just about cot over. Mr. Hurst did a capital bit of acting and scored a personal bit. His little com- pany la up to the standard and gave good performances. Sccrlng one of the biggest hits ever re- corded at the Palace. "Tho Volunteers," a singing qnartette. presented a real novelty. One of the members appears on the sta;e and calls for volunteers to form a quartette. His partners In the house respond and Join Mm on the stage, and tbey render five or six songs excellently. "Come Over to Dover" and "I Hear You Calling Mo" proved their feature numbers, the audience recalling them several times. Dorothy and Madeline Cameron, Intro- ducing song and ballet dancing, had to be contented with number one position, but arc deserving of a better spot. Their specialty Is classical, both girls being well Dp In the art of toe dancing. Bird Mlllman and company. In feats on the wire. Including tho famous "Mlllman Dance," closed the show and held them seated. Mltj Mlllman Is the same harem-tcarem of old. The Hearst-Sellg Weekly showed many In- teresting views. DARLING, ACT. MOB.) tl Manager Billy Wood began th<> second week of his stay up In Boston Monday, wbllo AL Darling plunged into his second as com- ma n.er-ln-'rhlef of the Colonial, with two good housefulls. _ Blanche Walsh Is the main box office nt- tiDctlon this week, with the meat of "The Woman In the Case" as the vehicle for dls- loylng her right to being one of our lend- ig actresses of the legitimate stage. Marie Horton, as "The Woman." gave an unblem- ished performance, while Sidney Klgtrs, Jerome Bruner and William Travers gave able support. Miss Wash's sketch Is -urrounded by six singing acts out of the Her eight on the MU, L/ipita Perea and A .er and Arllne being the only turns keeping away from songs, while evea Harry Adler got Into "Melody I hne" a few moments with bis impersonation of a Jew'' harp. With Anna Arllne he can feel e««nxed they have a turn that should get thrai "big going" always. MHe Perea the dalory little French acrlal- lst. did handsomely with her performance on the single bar trapese In opening spot, and rusdle Barto and Florence Clark scored with their graceful dancing In their "Marooned" comedy skit. All they need la talk that will veigh even with their stepping, for each has the art of putting over material. Fob Matthews and AL Shayne and com- pany got off strong and continued to Increase their speed to a. good round of appreciation for their efforts in "Dreamland." Sam Chip and Mary Marble got up close to Blanche Walsh In the running 'with their talk and songs in The Land of Dykes," closing the first half of the bill. Bert Lamont and his Cowboys opened after the "rest period." A sextette who sing finely together, but the sameness of the com- edy pranks hurts the solo numbers, while the final melodies (In one) would finish them even stronger than (he way tbey scored here (Sve bows) If delivered straight. Nellie V. Nichols, the Hebrew-Irish sing- ing comedienne, was a fine big hit, with a strong list of songs, especially her featuring "Will Someone Name My Nationality." A golden entertainer. Ralph Dunbar's cleanly clad hell ringers closed the show. Here's a musical turn that should never fall to hold Its audience seated. The boys sing as well as they play good music o.i the "silvery bells." Tod. HAMMBRSTEIN'S. (ABTIIUB HA&MEJISXEW, MOB.) A< really> excellent vaudeville bill Is offered at Harazcersteln'f this week. Flynn and McLaughlin, eccentric dancers, opened the show and "got over" nicely. Position No. 2 was accorded Mile. D'Al- nert, a prima donna. (New Acts.) A remarkably clever acrobatic turn Is tut- Llshcd by the Gaudscbnildts (two men and a woman). The men are very clever, both as acrobats and tumblers. In their act they are assisted by two poodle dogs. One of these animals is a whole show In himsslf, and is the best dog acrobat we have ever seen. The woman In the act does nothing beyond occasionally coaching the dogs. The act is a faat one. Ed. Morton and his songs scored distinct hits. 'Virtcm's songs are not as good as seme be has bad. But he has no trouble i-i getting them over. That a'ways Interesting actor, J. C. Nu- gent, appeared in another sketch of his owa writing, called "The Begular." and that "wise" crowd that make up the Monday mati- nees at Hammersleiii's enjoyed It thor- oughly, for It is not only full of clever lines, but it haa a clean, wholesome story, well told. His monologue, which precedes tbe actual beginning of his sketch, bristles v.lth humor. Mr. Nugent is a comedian well worth series, and his work In this latest effort from his sen Is artistic. He Is sup- ported by Jul© York, who lends youth and charm to her portrayal of a rlrl from a small town who comes to New York to sec Irs night life, but who is persuaded to return home by ft tipsy but noble-hearted clubman. Tho Courtney Sisters, a singing act, well known to patrons of hlg time vaudeville, won their rharc of the applause. Long Tack Sam's company Is tbe headline attraction. (New Acts.) A singing act that has a perfect right to the term "refinement" Is "The Salon Sing- ers," consisting of two women and three men, one at the piano. Their selections ire for the most part operatic, but all of the songs are well rendered. The women dress taste- fully and the men look comfortable In even- ing clothes. The Three Lyres (two men working straight and one in black face) contributed a good musical act. The comedian bad a number of Jokes that were new to New York, aud for this alone he deserves thanks. The comedy honors went to Fred J. Ardatu and company (four men and three women), who presented their act, "Iltram." It cer- tainly made that Monday afternoon nudlen o laugh. The act Is well put on and well acted, and Is a riot of fun. "The Harpist and the Slager." the spe- cially presented by Lyons and Yosco, pleased, as It always does. J.
