COLUMBIA CELEBRITY RECORDS MASTERWORKS SERIES SCHUBERT QuiIntTET IN A Major, For PIANOFORTE, VIOLIN, VIOLA, VIOLONCELLO AND Douste-Bass, Opus 114 (FoRELLEN QUINTET) The Forellen Quintet was composed in 1819, when Schubert was twentytwo years of age. ‘The combination of instruments is unique, the usual ensemble for string quintet consisting of either two violins, two violas and violoncello, or two violins, viola and two violoncellos. The principal theme is an elaboration of Schubert’s famous song “Die Forelle”’ (The Trout). Alone among Schubert’s major compositions it speaks nothing but joy. When one remembers that Schubert had not yet reached his full stature as an instrumental composer, the work stands as one of the most amazing constructions of creative genius. Walter Dahms, the greatest living student of Schubert, in his great German monograph on the composer, has given us our finest appreciation of the work: “How can speech reveal the graciousness of this quintet? . . . The scent of woodland and heath flower, the rustling of boughs and the choir of bird-voices are here. It is a countrypicture seen through the gates of Vienna; green, worked with flowers whose wealth of color is revealed only by the purest sunshine. . . . It is a concert-work in the best sense, since it gives play to virtuosity, to the will to beauty, brilliancy, thematic wealth, development and sheer musical treatment.” Masterworks Sef No. 18 SCHUBERT: QuINTET IN A Magjor (Forellen Quintet), Opus 114 By James LevEy—Violin; H.
