The gods had seen fit to bless her with talents in both piano playing and singing. For a while, she had difficulty in choosing between the two. Finally she decided to abandon the piano and devote herself entirely to training her voice in the best tradition of Italian opera. Returning to Italy after a successful tour of South re nn America she sang for Toscanini who engaged her fo La Scala There Castagna’s fame as a contralto soared. Castagna was invited to give guest performances with leading American opera companies including those in Chicago, San Francisco and St. Louis. In 1934 she was a leading singer at the Hippodrome in New York. She was finally engaged by Edward Johnson for the Metropolitan, and on March 12, 1936, she made her Met debut with great success in Aida. Since then she has been one of the leading stars of the nation’s first opera company.
