FRANCESCATTI, ZINO (Violinist)
(Columbia Maiterisorkcs records by Zino Francescatti — now under exclusive contract to Columbia Recording Corporation—will soon be available.) The violin is the blood and background of Zino Francescatti, who was born in Marseilles, France, in 1905. His father, born in Italy but a naturalized Frenchman, was both a violinist and ‘cellist, and his son’s only teacher. He himself had studied with se A Sivori, the only direct pupil of Paganini. His mother, born in Marcilice: was a violinist who married her teacher. Young Francescatti is also married to a violinist, who gave up her career to devote herself to her husband’s. With a high reputation behind him, based on extensive tours of Europe and South America, Francescatti came to the United States in 1939, where he has appeared with marked success in recitals and with the country’s major orchestras.

GERSHWIN, GEORGE (Composer-Pianist)
The world was shocked by the untimely death of George Gershwin in July, 1937. Gershwin’s career is the tale of a poor boy’s rise to the top of the musical world. As a lad, he studied the piano in his father’s restaurant, becoming a brilliant virtuoso, and as a young man he worked as a “’songplugger’ for a publishing house where his first successful tunes were written. His musical comedies are among the best-loved, and his haunting, orig
_ inal style, combining the blues with other more serious forms, has produced creations which are often considered the epitome of American music.
