He was a distinguished member of the State Opera in Berlin, and appeared in guest performances in the opera houses throughout the rest of Germany, also venturing to the Scandinavian countries, Spain and in 1936, to South America, where he sang at the Teatro Colon in Buenos : se oo i Aires. His debut with the Metropolitan Opera was made in 1939, while the company was appearing in Philadelphia. Many successful New York appearances—chiefly in Wagnerian roles—followed. Today, Janssen is one of the leading baritones of the Metropolitan.
