She studied under Paderewski and in 1932 won an International Chopin Prize and the Beethoven Prize of Vienna in 1933. In Warsaw, when it fell to the Germans, she was jailed for refusing to play for the Nazis. Upon her release, she made her way with great difficulty to Berlin. With the aid of the Brazilian Embassy there, she escaped to Brazil, where friends encouraged her to resume her career. After three years of concerts in South America, she slipped unheralded into New York, where her playing received the most enthusiastic acclaim in years. Miss Jonas was immediately engaged to appear as soloist with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York and to record exclusively for Columbia.
