He was born in Leningrad. At eighteen years of age he was appointed assistant conductor of the Leningrad Opera House. In this country he soon became one of the radio pioneers on the Columbia Broadcasting System. Widely noted for his interest in modern musical trends, Kostelanetz 2 commissioned and introduced compositions by many American composers, among them, Aaron Copland’s “‘Lincoln Portrait,“ Jerome Kern’s ““Mark Twain,”’ and many others. He has received doctorates of music from Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Albion College. Critics of 120 newspapers in the United States voted him first among conductors for his contributions to music on the radio. In 1938 Kostelanetz married Lily Pons. For eight months during the war Kostelanetz, together with his wife, made two separate overseas tours to the fighting fronts, covering China, Burma, India, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, North Africa, the Middle East and the Persian Gulf Command, organizing and conducting orchestras composed of GI's. In recognition of these outstanding services, he was given the “Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon by the War Department. With an orchestra of top-ranking musicians he has won nation-wide acclaim for his colorful presentation of widely-varied music. The ‘‘Kostelanetz eereniae are famous for their tonal balance, variety of color and dynamic effects.
