WEINGARTNER, FELIX (Conductor)
Weingartner’s career was an endless series of tri| umphs as a result of letting music flow. His secret — was to revitalize a score rather than to sensation-— alize it. Weingartner performances were wholly © honest, vigorous, direct and exciting. In them the — music of Beethoven sounded as Beethoven wrote it, — and the music of Brahms as Brahms wrote it.
Weingartner was born in Dalmatia in 1863. He © wees studied at the Conservatory of Weimar and with — Liszt. Later on he conducted the Royal Orchestra in Berlin, the Vienna Court Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1927 he became — director of the Basle Conservatory and leader of the concerts of the — Allgemeine Musikgesellschaft. Besides his conducting activities that ex— tended throughout the world, he wrote voluminously and his essay on Beetho— ven’s nine symphonies is virtually the final word on the subject.
