It was organized in 1891 by Theodore Thomas, who was aided in his endeavors by such prominent Chicago citizens as Charles Norman Fay, Marshall Field and N. K. Fairbanks. Originally known as the Chicago Orchestra, it became the Theodore Thomas Orchestra in 1906, and assumed its present name in 1912. Dr. Stock joined the orchestra as violinist in 1895, became assistant-conductor in 1899, and permanent conductor upon Theodore Thomas’ death in 1905. Under the splendid musical direction of Dr. Stock, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has maintained the Thomas tradition and ranks today as one of the world’s great symphony orchestras. rr Chicago Symphony Orchestra Recordings: Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spake Zarathustra) (R.
