He studied in the Milan Conservatory and at the age of twenty became a collaborator with Verdi, being requested to write the text of the ‘“‘Inno delli Nazioni,’’ which Verdi had been commissioned to compose for the Universal Exhibition held that year in London. He wrote librettos, cantatas and one successful opera, “Mefistofele.”’ Among his librettos were those of “Othello,’’ ‘‘Falstaff,” and ‘‘La Gioconda.’? He died in Milan, June 10, 1918.
