Opera in three acts; text by Barbier and Carré based upon Goethe’s “Wilhelm Meister’?; music by Ambroise Thomas. First produced in Paris, 1866. Thomas produced several operas with only moderate success. It was ‘‘Mignon” that put him in the first place among recent composers of French comedy-opera. Before the stage action of Mignon starts, it is known that many years before Mignon has been stolen by the gypsies from her father who has spent his life in wandering over the world as the harper Lothario, searching for his daughter. The first act is in the courtyard of the German inn, where Filina, with a.group of actors, is on the way to the Prince’s castle. Across their path strolls a band of gypsies with Mignon among them. She is ordered to dance for-the entertainment of the guests, and, on refusing through weariness, is threatened by the leader of’ the band. Lothario is among the guests, and tries to protect Mignon. A wandering student, Wilhelm, is present and rescues both Mignon and Lothario, engaging "Mignon as his page to protect her from further cruelty. Filina, the actress, persuades Wilhelm to join the troup and go to the castie. A flirtation follows which arouses the jealousy of Mignon, who has fallen in love with Wilhelm. As she is on the way to drown herself in the lake, she hears Lothario’s harp. Complications follow. Mignon puts herself under the protection of Lothario and in a moment of anger expresses a wish that the castle would burn down. Lothario, believing this will make Mignon happy, sets fire to the castle at a time when Mignon herself, unknown to him, is there. Wilhelm saves the life of the girl and becoming aware of her attachment for him, leaves Filina.
