CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA, THE While The Cleveland Orchestra is not one of the country's oldest or¬ chestras, it hos achieved a great position in American music. The Cleveland Orchestra became a permanent organization in 1918, sponsored by the Musical Arts Association. In 1918 the Association engaged Nickolai Sokoloff as conductor. Under Nikolai Sokoloff the Orchestra was welded into an organization of unusual ensemble qualities. In 1933 this firm foundation passed into the hands of Artur Rodzinski, under whose dynamic leadership the orchestra attained a high place among the symphony orchestras of the world. In 1943 Erich Leinsdorf succeeded Rodzinski as conductor, and he, in turn, was succeeded in 1946 by George Szell.
