As far back as 1870, in New York, he conceived the idea of a symphony organization which should be the “‘first in the land”’ ; with the courage of the true idealist, he struggled for years without adequate recognition until he went to Chicago. When he died there, he left the organization in the sympathetic hands of Stock.
