He subsequently was sent to England at the age of eleven to learn the language. He obtained American citizenship after residing several years in this country. DE LUCA, GIUSEPPE, Baritone (Deh Loo'-kah, Joo-sep'-peh)
P Giuseppe de Luca was until recently one of the most distinguished members of the Metropolitan Opera Company. A Roman by birth, at the age of thirteen his talent for singing was brought to the attention of Bartolini, the famous baritone and teacher. The boy then showed indications of musical feeling in marked degree, and his voice at that time was of the distinctive baritone quality. Fearing a possible change in it, though, it was not until some two years later that de Luca entered the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied for five years before making his début in “‘Faust’’. He spent eight winter seasons in the famous La Scala, then extended his career to the New World. Mr. de Luca’s name will always be associated, in musical history, with the great artists of his generation. It does not always happen that even a great artist is so assiduous in his:search after perfection. He has not, like so many, relied too much on his great natural gifts. The result is apparent in every phrase he sings.
