NEW DYNAMO 9 FIRST DRIVE MEETINGS AUGUR FAST START! Continued from Page 8 southern branches to look into the shuttle sheet situation pre- paratory to the first meetings in Harry Ballance’s district. Ed is confident the South is certain to punctuate the Drive’s beginning with a start that will pale any they have enjoyed in past years. Okay, here’s hoping — and we’ll soon be seeing you, Southland. F RANKLY, we are looking for- ward with much enthusiasm to the New Orleans meeting. None other than Mary Healy, former secretary to Manager Ernest Y. Landaiche, will be in town mak- ing a personal appearance in con- junction with the showing of “Second Fiddle” in that city. And what a great job Mary does in her first real opportunity. Judging from the comments of the Home Office attaches who have seen the picture, Mary clicked there in the grand manner anticipated by those of us who saw the musical at the studio. Mary is going to get a royal reception. Mr. Wohber personally arranged for her re- turn to and appearance in New Orleans—and when Mary heard we were going to hold a meeting there, she said: “I want to he there.” And we’re glad to have her on hand. She was among those who attended the first meeting in 1938 at New Orleans. Keep your eyes on Mary—she’s going to be one of the screen’s topflight sing- ing stars! • W E want to take this opportu- nity of expressing our thanks to Truman Talley and to his pub- licity head, Dan Doherty, for the fine co-operation they are extend- ing us personally. Getting out two publications on the run each week, flying and riding here and there and attending the Drive meetings will keep us well occupied for the next month. But such co-opera- tion as we are getting from these and other gentlemen certainly makes our task easier. We par- ticularly want to thank, too, Harry Brand, Charlie Goldie, Milt Howe, Katy Robinson and others at the studio who are keeping us daily supplied with up-to-the-minute production information. And while we are expressing our gratitude for co-operation on this trip we want to thank the division, district and branch managers, Charles E. McCarthy, Jack Sich- elman, Martin Moskowitz, Jim Glynn, Al Levy, Izzy Lincer, Jack Bloom, Sam Epstein, Rose Druck- er, Fred Bullock, all of the branch correspondents and countless others. To all we say, again, thanks! • G eorge w. ballentine’s San Franciscans stressed the claim that “this year we’re re- turning to the class of prize win- ners.” As for Jack Dillon and his Angelinos, if they get from Na- tional Theatres the same sort of real co-operation they gave the latter in the Skouras Showman- ship Drive, the Southern Califor- nians should have no trouble get- ting a slice of Kent Drive bonus money. This Coast will definitely he much stronger than it was last year at the outset of the Drive. • I EVY’S three district managers —Stan Mayer, Joe Podoloff and Joe Scott—didn’t forget that the Los Angeles session marked the beginning of his career as Drive leader, so they thoughtfully sent wires of good wishes. That’s a hustling, bustling bunch in Des Moines, Omaha and Minneapolis —and they want New Dynamo to inform “the world” they are out “to finish one, two and three.” But they’re going to get lots more competition than they received in last year’s Drive. • N OT since we whirled around the country with Herman Wobber during the first and sec- ond Drives have we had with us the enthusiastic walker Levy is. The most welcome relief to us, anyway, during these swift trips comes from walks before or after the branch meetings. • N EXT week’s New Dynamo will be printed in Denver. The fol- lowing week we will publish in New Orleans. The third issue will go to press in Detroit. Meantime, the Drive publications will be printed in Chicago, Atlanta and Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. You have been supplied with the itin- erary and know where to forward your letters. Thanks for them. • PARTICIPATING in prepara- * tions for the Drive right now are 11 more employees than we had at our 37 exchanges at this time last year. Fred Metzler, stu- dio treasurer, told us that the studio’s weekly payroll carries an average of 3,000 people. That’s a key spot in the Dakotas, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and a flock of other States. Which gives you a good idea of what it takes to cre- ate motion pictures the like of which our studios deliver! And a more efficient studio you won’t find in Hollywood; we’ve got, by far, the best operated and most efficient plant this industry has EVER boasted. C ONGRATULATIONS to Bos- ton’s ace booker, Sam Berg. He is tops in New England. A more popular film man than he is in New England, you’ll find nowhere in these United States or Canada. And Sam, who is Boston’s local Drive leader, is celebrating his 25th year as an employee of this organization. More power to you, Sam. • H ERE’S a note typical of com- munications we have been re- ceiving from secretaries, stenog- raphers, clerks and inspectresses during the past two weeks: “Now that we have a branch Drive leader you can rest assured competition will be keener among all of us—and the prize winners will know they have been in the fight of their lives if they squeeze us out of the money, which they won’t do.” That’s the Drive spirit that wins! • O MAHA — Thursday morning and we have finally pene- trated Drive Leader Levy’s own district. First thing he heard was this from Omaha Manager Joe Scott: “Well, bet 100 to 1 that you’ll get that President’s prize and that Omaha will be in there with the prize-getters.” And how Levy wants that President’s prize! In fact, he gets into New York on July 28 — which is final week of the K-6 season. He will know then exactly where he stands. • W E have no sympathy with those exhibitors who think that by going over a branch or district manager’s head they can talk the Home Office into a better deal than they can negotiate lo- cally. Frankly, we view this atti- tude as a distinct compliment and tribute to the ability of the local district or branch manager. And it must be, indeed, gratifying to our managers to know that when such requests are sent by exhibi- tors to Mr. Wobber or the three division managers, they are in- variably referred back to the lo- cal territorial pilot. After all, the local manager and personnel must “live” with the accounts — and there is no reason why any exhibitor should feel he can over- ride the loyal manager who is do- ing his job according to the rules. • C LYDE BLASIUS, Salt Lake City Drive leader, is well on the job, judging from what we as- certained at that livewire ex- change. Things are looking up there. Office is particularly en- thused over the fact that studio will produce “Brigham Young” on the lavish plane announced and there is also much interest in that territory in “Drums Along the Mohawk” that Jack Ford is directing at Cedar City, Utah. However, as you know, “Drums Along the Mohawk”, has its locale in northern New York State. E VERY time we hit Salt Lake City we think of Clay Hake, Australian head for this com- pany. Why? This is Clay’s home- town. Hake led one of the Over- seas Department’s greatest and most successful Drives several years ago. That Drive started the Overseas Drive hailing, for his leadership was inspiring and instituted new ideas that made for keener competition—and big- ger results. • N OT surprising is the fact that so far on this trip every ex- hibitor whom we have met has gone out of his way to praise “Young Mr. Lincoln”. Although this Cosmopolitan production did not jam them in as had been ex- pected — and as this great Za- nuck picture was entitled to bring them in — every exhibitor with Continued on Page 12 OFFICIAL SCHEDULE OF DRIVE MEETINGS Following is the official itinerary and schedule of meetings that Drive Leader M.
