His sudden death in 1922 brought to an end a career that held more pressure than that of any of his contemporaries. Laurenti was born in Verona, Italy, and studied under the best Italian singing masters. However, his family was opposed to his choice of the theatre for a profession and sent him to Germany to complete his training as an engineer. Two years later, following the advice of prominent singers, he renewed his vocal study, and at the beginning of the war he had received offers from two of the greatest opera houses in Germany. Because of his nationality he refused these offers and came to America, where he was at once engaged for the Metropolitan Opera Company. He won equal distinction on both the operatic stage and in the concert field after his arrival in America. His lyric and dramatic qualities were so beautifully balanced in his art and voice that he was equally at home in either field. He possessed remarkable linguistic facilities which enabled him to approach the great songs of the world’s most famous composers with an absolute appreciation and an _ exceptional degree of artistry.
