Tenor SER ean eK CHALMERS, THOMAS, Baritone, RE-CREATIONS ty Thomas Chalmers, a native of New York City, and a leading baritone of the Metropolitan Opera, is considered the most dramatic actor in opera in the new world. Mr. Chalmers was engaged in the real estate business when be began the study of music. In 1909 he gave up his business and went to Florence, Italy, to study with the late Vincenzo Lombardi, one of the most famous singing masters. He remained with him for two years and then made his operatic debut as Marcello in ‘‘La Bohéme.” Henry W. Savage heard of this American’s wonderful success in Milan. He journeyed there and engaged Mr. Chalmers to sing the part of Jack Rance in ‘‘ The Girl of the Golden West,” in which he appeared throughout the United States. Mr. Chalmers returned to Italy for further study under Lombardi, and, after the completion of his schooling, was engaged as leading baritone with the Century Opera Company. His repertoire includes the baritone roles in twenty-five operas, which he sings in the original language as well as in English, and a comprehensive list of songs in English, Italian, French and German.
