Form of Guide. This Guide is divided into two parts — a comprehensive, alphabetic title and subject list ; and a selected, classified list. Part 1. Alphabetic list. This part is placed first for the convenience of the user since it serves as an index to Part 2. It includes, in one alphabet, the titles and subject headings of all films listed, with the classification numbers of those which are in Part 2. The single alphabet also includes series and author entries. Subjects have been assigned freely for all films because educators have expressed their belief that even a few feet of film on a specific subject is valuable. The subjects given are those with which the film deals — not the particular courses in school in which it may be used. A few headings are used to indicate types of films. Films with a foreign language sound track are listed as "French language films," "Spanish language films," etc. The notes under the main title entry will show whether English titles have been added. Films which consist entirely of animation are listed as "Animated films," "Cartoon films" or "Puppet films." The "Fictional films" listed in this Guide are based on some literary work, have an historical background or are suitable for assembly and club programs. Some films are included and listed under "Dance music" for use at school dances. Part 2. Classified list. The films listed in Part 2 are those selected by our collaborators and are classified according to the Dewey decimal classification. The following information is given for each film: title, main source, release date, length and other data, prices, class number, grading, descriptive annotation and excerpts from critical reviews. Indication of the source is given at the end of each quoted note. "Advisory committee" indicates a review made by an Advisory Committee on the Use of Motion Pictures of which Mark A. May is the Chairman. State names refer to the Visual Education Department of the state college, university or education department. Other quotations have been taken from periodicals or special lists which are briefly indicated. Most of the grading indicated is from information given by our collaborators when voting on the films to be included, and while the films have been used successfully at the levels indicated they may be found useful in other grades as well. The descriptive notes include the name of a sponsor or producer, if other than the main source. Names of educational consultants or collaborators who advised or assisted in the production of a film are given when known. No attempt has been made to report on the condition of the films listed other than general notes from collaborators as to excellence of photography or sound recording. Selection. The selected list is based on the advice of many educators, on a comparison of selected lists of films and on consultation with producers and others interested in non-theatrical films. Tentative lists of titles of films are voted on by 40 collaborators, and on the basis of their votes the films are selected for inclusion in Part 2 of this Guide.
