News from tne Department of AudioVisual Instruction, National Education Association A-V Certification Conference An exploratory conference on certification of audio-visual supervisors took place in Washington September 28 and 29 under the sponsorship of DAVI. Ernie Tiemann, of the University of Texas (also President of the Texas Audio-Visual Instruction Directors Association and a member of the DAVI Board of Directors) served as chairman of the conference. Among problems discussed were: (1) What types of instructional materials and services should be provided by an audio-visual instructional materials center? (2) What are the supervisory and administrative responsibilities of a supervisor of audio-visual instructional materials? (3) What competencies, knowledges, skills, and abilities are needed to satisfy the professional qualifications of a supervisor of audio-visual instructional materials? (4) What should be the educational and professional experience requirements for the certification of supervisors of audio-visual instructional materials? (5) What steps should be taken to pre-plan with college and university teacher education institutions to solve the problems that are preliminary to initiating a certification program? (6) What are the problems that we must anticipate to arise when initiating or operating the certification program? The conference was held in accordance with the recommendation of the DAVI Board of Directors at their last meeting that steps be taken to determine what thinking with regard to certification requirements for au by J. DAVI Committee Reports The Adult Education Committee (Chairman, Ken Mclntyre of the University of North Carolina) has been responsible for preparation of materials for the workshop section of audio-visual education in the October issue of "Adult Leadership," the journal of the Adult Education Association. Twenty cents each for 100 or more copies sent to one address. Archives— E. Winifred Crawford and Lee W. Cochran, Co-Chairmen. William F. Kruse has been selected archivist by the committee. The DAVI archives are being cataloged and housed in the State University of Iowa Library at Iowa City. Tape-recorded interviews with outstanding leaders in the audio-visual field are being collected. The executive committee has approved the committee's recommendation that honorary life memberships be established for long and meritorious service. Buildings and Equipment— Irene F. Cypher and A. J. Publication of the final report is expected in about nine more months— which goes to show that this committee has a human approach to its work. College and University— .A series of nine folios compiled by the College and University Committee (Bob de Kieffer, Chairman) is now ready for distribution. These folios consist of materials collected on the following topics and are bound in loose-leaf binders: (1) Administrative Forms and Procedures. (2) Handbooks and Teachers Manuals, (3) Catalogs, (4) Newsletters and Bibliographies, (5) Campus Surveys and Progress Reports, (6) "How-To-Do-It" Materials, (7) Research Projects, (8) ,'\udio-Visual Course Outlines, and (9) Production Facilities and Production Releases. These folios can be borrowed at no charge by all institutional members of DAVI. Four duplicate sets on each topic have been prepared. Because of the limited number available, they can be borrowed only one topic at a time and can be kept for no longer than two-week periods. The folios have been collected over a period of a little over one year. It is the plan of the committee to keep each of the folios up to date by adding new materials as they appear in each of the topic areas. Radio and Recordings— Kelsey B. Sweatt, Chairman. This committee is publishing the first national tape recordings catalog, due off the press approximately November 1. This catalog will cover about 600 programs submitted by fifteen institutions. The national tape repository for the masters of the tapes listed in the catalog is located at Kent State University, Ohio.
