Mention EDUCATIONAL SCREEN Cover: Rudolph Shines Ag;ain You see the now-famous Red-Nosed Reindeer on this month's cover in a happy holiday mood with nose aglow. But things were not always so. Earlier in the Christmas tale, Rudolph had a terrible trouble: the light in his nose went out! How Rudolph learned to forget himself and to help others and how he thus won back his rosy nose is the story of Rudolph Shines Again, a 38-frame color filmstrip distributed by the Society for Visual Education (poem copyrighted by Robert L. May). We predict the filmstrip will be popular with young people of all ages. Another Tale Since dog stories are enjoying a new popularity these days, perhaps EdScreen can be forgiven for adding another to the collection. For no reason at all except that we think you'll enjoy them, we herewith present two letters — and therein lies the tale: Dr. Francis W. Noel, Chief Bureau of Audio-Visual Education California State Dept. of Education Dear Francis: Emily Benton Frith was just in the office and she had her Scotty dog. Mother Mack, with her. Jokingly she said, "You know, Mother Mack is an educator." She was referring to the dog's starring role in two or three of the pictures she has made. I asked her whether or not Mother Mack had a teaching certificate. "No, not yet," was her reply. It seems to me that this is quite an EDUCATIONAL SCREEN EDITORIAL STAFF PAUL C. REED— Editor JUNE N. Wouldn't it be possible for you to arrange for Mother Mack to be presented a teaching certificate by the State of California? If so, will you be sure to have pictures taken so that this event can be featured in an important audio-visual magazine? Paul C. Reed, Consultant, Dept. of Instructional Materials Rochester, New York Mr. Paul C. Reed, Consultant Dept. of Instructional Materials Rochester, New York Dear Mr. Reed: Dr. Francis Noel and Dr. George Ormsby of our .\udio-Visual Education Division were kind enough to permit me to read and react to your letter of October 25 in which you suggest that the State of California should issue a teaching credential to "Mother Mack." .4s you may know, the State Board of Education has established certain criteria for the issuance of teaching credentials. One of these criteria is that the applicant must have reached his 18th birthday. Another is that the applicant must submit an acceptable set of fingerprint cards. The prints must cover both hands. As soon as "Mother Mack" can comply with these criteria, I suggest that you submit a final application for her. We are pleased to note that "Mother Mack" is doing a most effective job and are anxious, of course, to add her to our profession in California. James C.
