of Teachers of English. The recording can be useful for individual listening and for critical appraisal by individuals and by small groups. However, Mr. Highet lacks the intensity of delivery to make this a really great recording. His accent is broad — perhaps Bostonian would describe it — and his emphases lack the impact that one would expect from a dramatically trained reader. These impressions of the recording, we believe, detract from its value as a classroom tool. The script is superb. High school students should be aware of the story, and this is one device to bring it to their attention. Mr. Lieberson of CBS We were delighted last June when Dr. Frank Stanton, President of the Columbia Broadcasting System, named Goddard Lieberson as President of Columbia Records, the record and phonograph manufacturing division of CBS. Mr. Lieberson has been associated with Columbia Records since 1939 and during those years has been instrumental in putting on disc many fine recordings which have great potential school values. Mr. Lieberson is particularly responsible for pioneering in the fields of recorded documentaries. Magnetic Tape Splicer Sotisfoction Guaranteed Complete with new pro-cut Mylar tap^tabs. Murrow's series of "I Can Hear It Now" discs, "The Confederacy," George Bernard Shaw's "Don Juan in Hell" and the Columbia Literary Series. Golden Slumbers "Golden Slumbers" (Book-Records, Inc., Dept. L, 222 East 46 Street, New York 17, N. Y.) is a recording of lullabies from many lands. There are Dutch, English, German, Irish, Scottish, French and .American lullabies, as well as those of other countries and other peoples. They are all beautifully sung by Peter Seeger, Elizabeth Knight, Frank Cooke, Jean Ritchie, Ruth Welcome, Juanita Cascone, Robin Roberts, and Wallace House. Each of the singers is accompanied by a solo instrument such as the dulcimer, harp, guitar, zither, lute or banjo. Beautiful though the recording is, and magnificent the accompanying book which contains not only the words but also the music, the recording has limited school applications. Because the language is difficult it may be undesirable to bring many of these lullabies to the attention of the youngest school children. And because the content is lullabies, it may be unwise to offer these selections to older, more sophisticated students. School choirs, both accompanied and a cappella, can find much in these recordings to interest them and we believe that several of the lullabies would make suitable program elements for such groups. Then, too, a program of lullabies sung by school children — and the lullabies could be selected from this particular grouping — might be very well received by a PTA organization, or might be woven into an asseni bly program. Such a program would have general interest and broad appeal. Finally, as we indicated above, for just pure listening these are effective recordings. If the record is to be played and the total participation is to be listening, we believe that "Golden Slumbers" will appeal to many class groups and age levels. everything in electronics for the SCHOOL ALLIED'S 356-PAGE 1957 CATALOG get the most widely used ELECTRONIC SUPPLY GUIDE Order from the one complete, dependable school supply source for all your electronic supply needs.
