I don't know how many picture houses it has, but David says they are always packed. The films are hours and hours long, most of them the stories acted out of the old Hindu legends — god and heroes, their loves and difficulties and wonders performed. Of our films they like horror and mystery and westerns, and they mob the Tarzan pictures ! We haven't found our 'Toomai' yet. We have been through the Palace elephant stables where the mahouts tend H.H.'s processional elephants, and through the elephant camps where they keep the work elephants— looking for a young mahout son. Now David has gone further afield to the elephant camps in Coorg, Cochin and Malabar — hundreds of miles. Meantime we are all keeping our eyes open here. Yesterday I spied a likely lad in the hotel yard and hauled him up for inspection. No ! He was a 'sweeper' (low caste) and kneeled and kissed our feet.
