department on the roof, with an animal man, Toni, Menagerie in charge. But Toni doesn't have much luck. The four little pups were getting on so beautifully, so fat and rolypoly, and the pie bitch is really a darling mother to them. This morning Toni showed me one of them all shivery and foaming at the mouth. It had rabies. A mad dog had come into the compound and bitten it, bitten its little tongue. Now we have a baby black buck, and I do hope it will live. The mouse deer is still very shy. The baby panther is getting rather rough for play. He squalls up on the roof, squeezed half way through the railings, peering down at us, begging for someone to come up and get him so that he can prowl around the house and chew things up. Daddy's slippers are particularly growly things to chew. We have been 'shooting'1 monkeys all morning — our own tribe of monkeys in the trees in our back yard. A wandering tribe of snake charmers and jugglers came around and the minute the python came out of the basket you should have heard those monkeys, the din they made, and how they made a rush through the trees and all hung, fascinated, hair on end, over the basket. Now they have discovered a new game. They are shooting the shoots down the fly ^Shooting' with us, of course, never has anything to do with a gun — only the camera. 41
