DRISSELL, at the pro game to see the Shamrocks perform. JOHN JOSEPH ("J. J.”) MADDEN, prominent veteran Norfolk theatre man, died November 7 at his home, 1208 DeBree Avenue, after a long illness. He was 5 7 years old. To many of his friends he was known as "Spot” and "Johnny.” He was interested in boxing and wrestling, and at one time he was inspector of the State Boxing and Wrestling Commission. —Kit. MALONEY, FRANK CFROARKE are making the rounds in preparation for the Miss Shenandoah Valley Beauty Contest. LEW AYRES, Tri-State Electrical Company, Winchester, was a visitor. LEFTY LINDAMOOD, usher, Dalke’s New Market, also ace pitcher for the local baseball club, pitched his team to the Shenandoah County Championship. Every town, city in the valley, from Winchester to Lexington, expected to send girls to the Valley Contest in New Market. FRANK O’ROARKE was a patient at the University of Virginia Hospital, suffering from sinus trouble. — F. O’R. Norfolk MR., MRS. E. L. COLI.AMER, JR., Park, report quite a wet viewing of the Notre Dame-Navy game. ROSCOE DRISSELL was host at Loew’s to a special screening of "The World Is Ours.” Wells and the Lichtman theatres have both switched their respective radio programs from WTAR to WGH. Byrd front looks spic-and-span. SYDNEY GATES has been given the suggestion to change the name of the Roxy to the Rooney. This is caused by Syd’s playing a goodly number of pictures with MICKEY ROONEY. EARL WESTBROOK seems to be pleased with the renovation of the marquee at the Granby. PETE BOULOGNE, Norva, "snagged” one of the finest 24-sheet stands in the downtown district. N. C. KING, Heywood-Wakefield’s Baltimore office, was in. MR., MRS. GRAHAM BARBEE, Lichtman supervisors, report an enjoyable vacation. LEO GREENWOOD shared speaking honors with representative COLGATE W. DARDEN, JR., and city manager CHARLES B. BORLAND at a barbeque given by the Greek-American Club. Levines report that they hope work will start on their new theatre in Portsmouth the first of the year. PIERRE BOULOGNE is booking for the Norva, Granby. Answer to anxious inquirer: No, that’s not SELMA COPLON, Wilder home office, whose engagement was announced, but her sister, SYLVIA. Norton WILLIAM A. BYERS recently visited film exchanges in Washington. Perlsburg State Amusement Company is contemplating two new theatres, one here and another in Narrows. C. A. LUCAS and JACK REEL are president, manager, respectively. Richmond BEN PITTS opened his new East End November 7 to a standout crowd. Theatre, located on 2 5 th Street near the Patrick Henry, is of modern construction. THOMAS PITTS, nephew of Ben, is the permanent manager, with ROY RICHARDSON, up from Suffolk, helping along with details for a few days. B. D. COMER is doorman, LUCY COBB cashier, W. B. FOX operator, CLAUDE RICHARDSON, JAMES STRICKLAND ushers, JIM PRICE porter. House seats 970. Among those on hand for the opening were FRED BEIERSDORF, JERRY PRICE, JIM OWENS, EDDIE MARTIN, JERRY BRYCE, JERRY MURPHY, WALTER COULTER, BILL BALLENGER, OLMSTEAD KNOX, LAWRENCE O'HARE, J. S. DUSMAN, HARRY ROTH. BILLY BALLENGER is keeping bachelor hall again. His wife was called to Pittsburgh by the sickness of her daughter. ROBERT EGAN, Wilmer and Vincent manager, is infanticipating. MORTON G. THALHIMER was in Baltimore to witness the Notre Dame-Navy game. MERCER STILLMAN, Berio representative, ELWOOD ATKINS, Bellevue usher, made a twoday tour of the western part of the State last week, installing vending machines in Staunton, Lexington, Roanoke, Clifton Forge, Pulaski, South Boston. BARRON RAMSEY, Byrd service staff, is seriously ill in Memorial Hospital. LEROY FORD, projectionist, Byrd, is very proud of his son, who is on the first team at Randolph Macon. Roths are building a new theatre in Broadway, Virginia. BERNARD SMITH replaced JIMMY WOOD as assistant, Patrick Henry. CHARLIE HANN is now the projectionist at the Patrick Henry, succeeding W. B. FOX, transferred to the new East End. AUBREY DAVIS is now advertising manager, Patrick Henry. BEN PITTS announces that his latest enterprise in Fredericksburg, bowling alleys, is doing capacity business. MR., MRS. ELMER BRIENT celebrated their silver wedding anniversary November 5. It should have been celebrated on the 4th — but that’s another story. "GIBBY” HARRISON, secretary, Richmond Theatre Supply office, is one of the reasons why exhibitors are making frequent calls there. CHARLIE HULBERT is celebrating the third anniversary of the Lee.
