Bert Ennis. 10m. A very summary story of governments for the last 40 years, this should appeal to the regiphiles, the history-minded. Recounting, with pictures from the Svensk Film Industries, the changes from monarchies to republics to dictatorships, there art presented such as Their Royal Highnesses Oscar II, Gustav V. Wilhelm, Victor Emanuel, Georg: V., Nicholas, Ferdinand, Alfonso, Leopold III, U. S. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Dictators Stalin, Mussol ni, Hitler. The picture is weak as entertainment, but fine as a documentary film. GOOD. PARAMOUNT PICTORIAL, No. 5. Paramount. 9m. Lifting itself high above the usual of the everyday short, this offers variety, beauty. First clip is an educational camera study of the 17-year locust’s transformation from an insect to a winged noise-maker. A technicolor "screen painting” of lovely American landscapes follows. The closing is very well taken care of by the Eton Boys, who present songs of yesteryear, accompanied by movie shots from early pictures. It is grand program. EXCELLENT. (P8-5). SCREEN SNAPSHOTS, No. 2. Columbia. 10m. Perfect fare for star idolizers. Front-rank heroes, heroines, visit Bob Burns’ ranch. Tyrone Power, his mother are seen dedicating a plaque in his father’s memory at the Hollywood bowl. Charlie McCarthy, Edgar Bergen are shown leaving their footprints to posterity at Grauman’s Chinese. Leo Carillo relaxes on his ranch by riding his pinto. GOOD. (9852). STRANGER THAN FICTION, No. 57. Universal. 9m. A millionaire whose hobby is making toys for poor children; a cow with quadruplets, sculpture in metal; church services for the deaf, dumb; oil painting in miniature; the smallest post office in the world; a girl contortionist all provide an interesting 9 minutes. Alois Havrilla’s narration enlivens the short. GOOD. (3368). STRANGER THAN FICTION, No. 5 8. Universal. 9m. One of the more entertaining of the series, this shows a prep school dean who plays the school champ in marbles with a day off as the wager — the headmaster wins; "bathtub farming;” forerunner of the submarine; butterfly decorations out of fishbones; self-loading truck; historic doll characters; largest bell collection in the world. Alois Havrilla does the commentary. GOOD. (3369). A TRIP TO THE SKY French Film Exchange. 1 Om. One of the most novel shorts to be seen, this is literally what the title claims. Photographic journeys to the various planets, reconstructed from telescopic pictures, accompanied by an interesting English commentary, this is a scientific document produced by the Scientific Institute of France. EXCELLENCE. A VAUDEVILLE INTERLUDE. VitaphoneVarieties. 10m. This is just filler vaudeville, with the Gaudsmith brothers, dogs presenting a comedy novelty; Betty and Bob in musical diversion and a harmonica group playing. This is routine. FAIR. (4902). THE WASHINGTON PARADE, No. 1. Columbia. 10m. The title tells the story. It is a pictorial visit to the in, outs of the nation’s capitol, done informally, interestingly. There are shots of the various government buildings, etc. GOOD. (9901). Sport ATHLETIC ODDITIES. 20th Century-Fox— Adventures of a Newsreel Cameraman. 9m. Oddities, various novel games, clipped from the newsreels, presented with a Lew Lehr accompaniment (straight), a nice sports filler. GOOD. (9204). FROLICKING FROGS. Grantland Rice Sportlight — Paramount. 10m. In one of the most unusual shorts presented, Ted Husing explains the thrills of frog-leaping competition, the intricacies of frog training. The last few minutes are a combination of humor, interest, as the bulls cavort in their private swimming pool. EXCELLENT. (R8-6) . SKI RHYTHM. Columbia— Sport Thrills. 9m. Photographed in sepia against the majesty of un named mountains, Columbia cameramen, leaving the library behind, have caught skiing at its best, done a superb job of the assignment. Hannes Schneider leads the contingent of skiers, who reveal all the dazzling beauty, speed, with even breath-taking spills. EXCELLENT. (9802). Color Travel CALL OF HAWAII. Modern Film. 10m. A veritable pot pourri of Hawaiian sights, notable especially for the great number of items included, this is, for that reason, plus the fact that the Cinecolor treatment is below standard, just a color travel filler. John S. Martin’s narration is, however, to be commended. FAIR. COSTA RICA. Paramount. — Color Cruise. 10m. A slow-moving trip through this Latin American country is not helped along very much by its outstanding photography, good Cinecolor. It is run-of-the-mine stuff, with nothing exceptional . FAIR. (K8-3). SYDNEY — PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA. Metro — Fitzpatrick Traveltalk. 8m. In beautifully-done technicolor, this takes the audience to this attractive Australian seaport. Enlivened by a clear, well-handled narration, there are shots of the beaches, boating off-shore, business sections, zoo, etc. It is another Fitzpatrick topnotcher. EXCELLENT. (T-8 54). Travel GOING PLACES, No. 5 8. Universal 10m. With Graham McNamee’s sparkling narrative as the guide, the movie-goer takes a trip to the Cape Cod windmills, manufacturer of miniature mills. The second clip is a visit to Corsica, Napoleon’s birthplace. Photography is excellent. GOOD. (3 3 56). Commercial A FRIEND INDEED. American Red Cross. 2m. Lovelier than ever in a nurse’s uniform, Deanna Durbin sings out her praise of the ARC; asks the people to contribute as little or as much as possible during the current drive for funds. It is an entertaining two minutes for a grand cause. EXCELLENT. 223
